‘Genocidal’ Instagram posts: Sikh body files complaint against Kangana Ranaut, seeks withdrawal of Padma Shri

The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) wrote to President Ram Nath Kovind, requesting him to withdraw the Padma Shri conferred on actor Kangana Ranaut as she was “spreading communal hatred, targeting a religious community, and insulting farmers and freedom fighters.”

The right-leaning actor Kangana has been heavily criticised for her recent Instagram comment following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement to repeal the three farm laws. Kangana took to Instagram and called the decision ‘shameful and unfair’.

Sikh Body Writes to President, Seeks Withdrawal of Kangana Ranaut's Padma Shri

“She does not deserve this honour. She does not represent the spirit of India which is based on harmony and goodness for all. Considering the social sentiments, Padma Shri should be withdrawn from her immediately for insulting farmers, Sikhs, and freedom fighters,” Sikh body’s letter to the President stated.

The Sikh body also filed a police complaint against actor for using derogatory language against the Sikh community on social media. The complaint was filed at the cyber cell of the Mandir Marg Police Station.

” … and (she) further dubbed the Sikh community as Khalistani Terrorists, and recalling the massacre and genocide happened during 1984 and earlier, as planned and calculated move on part of (late former prime minister) Indira Gandhi,” read Sikh body’s complaint.

“It is submitted that the post is deliberately prepared and shared with criminal intention to hurt feelings of Sikh community. Therefore, I request your office to look into the matter on priority basis and strict legal action may be taken after registering an FIR,” the President, DSGMC and Shiromani Akali Dal leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa wrote.

Sirsa said that a DSGMC delegation will go to Mumbai on Monday to meet Maharashtra’s Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil and lodge a complaint against the actor.

“This time it will be ensured that Kangana Ranaut does not get bail and she goes to jail for spitting venom against Sikhs time and again. She is playing the card of Hindutva for cheap publicity”, Sirsa alleged.

“She should either be put in mental hospital or in jail. We demand strict action from govt for her hateful content on Instagram,” Sirsa tweeted.

The Indian Youth Congress has also filed a complaint against Kangana. “Kangana Ranaut is a renowned actress and has a huge fan following of more than 7.8 million (78 lakh) people on Instagram. Therefore, her intentional, irresponsible and seditious posts have the ability to excite hatred, contempt and disaffection towards the Republic of India,” the complaint read.
