Hyderabad: Barely two weeks have passed since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s close aide and eminent Gujarat businessman Zafar Sareshwala assumed charge of Chancellor of Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU), but a tussle has erupted between members of BJP’s Minority Morcha and MANUU. On Tuesday, members of the BJP’s Minority Morcha held a protest demonstration demanding a CBI probe into the alleged irregularities in the university. On Wednesday, MANUU’s teachers and students held a counter protest calling the Minority Morcha’s protest as “malicious” campaign and “interference” in affairs of the university.
BJP leaders including Morcha’s president Haneef Ali also demanded the annulment of Pro-Vice Chancellor claiming that his appointment was against the university’s appointment terms. They also protested against the appointment of ‘ineligible’ non-Urdu professors for various posts in the university.
To counter the allegations and protests, staff and students of Maulana Azad National Urdu University held a protest demonstration and condemned the “malicious” campaign being run against University and its authorities and said that they would resist “outside” interference in affairs of MANUU.
Addressing the demonstrators Dr. Yousuf Khan, President of the MANUU Teachers Association said that all decisions taken by the administration are transparent. “We are responsible members of the society. If there had been any irregularities as claimed by the vested interests, we would have been the first to raise our voice,” Dr. Khan said.
“Some people have been trying to sabotage the progress made by the university since its inception in 1998. The progress of the university is evident by the fact that thousands of Urdu speaking students have been able to get jobs after completing education in a variety of fields from MANUU,” said Dr Mohammed Fariyad, former President of MANUUTA and Associate Professor of Mass Communication.
“The staff and students staged an impromptu rally today in response to the so-called dharna by people who claimed to be the members of the minority morcha of the BJP,” said Abid Abdul Wasay, Public Relations Officer of the university.
Zafar Sareshwala took charge as the Chancellor of MANUU on 14th Jan 2015. He reportedly arrived in a BMW convoy and inaugurated the newly established Center for Deccan Studies building in the presence of all staff members of MANUU. Vice Chancellor Mohammed Miyan along with other administrative staff members gave Sareshwala a quick tour of the University campus.
