Google, OnePlus shipped all phones with latest Android OS in 2018

Google, OnePlus shipped all phones with latest Android OS in 2018

phonesGurugram : Google and OnePlus were the only brands which shipped all their smartphones with the latest version of Android OS in 2018, a new report said on Monday.

According to market research techARC, 32 models of smartphones were launched by various original equipment manufacturers last year.

Overall, Vivo led the number of launches with 7 models having the latest Android OS version shipped out of the factory.

The second spot was taken by Nokia which launched four models, followed by Tecno (3), the report said.

“With stock Android becoming the preference of users, the OEMs are able to reduce the upgrade turnaround time for OS as it requires minimal integration from their end after Google releases one,” said Faisal Kawoosa, Founder and Chief Analyst, techARC.

Nearly 80 per cent of the launches with latest OS version had Android 8.1 (Oreo) pre-loaded when shipped for sale.

The remaining 20 per cent had Android 9.0 (Pie) version.

“The good news is that even for the entry level (sub-Rs 5,000), users could get a smartphone with the latest Android version, which were sold by Nokia and Lava,” the findings showed.

Smartphone users in India install around 50 apps on average: Report

Smartphone users in India install around 50 apps on average: Report

appsNew Delhi : While the number of apps installed by smartphone users in India range from five to 207, the average number of installed apps on a phone is 51, said a new report on Wednesday.

However, people do not use all the apps they install. Most of the people in India use just about 24 apps on their smartphones, according to the research from technology research consulting firm techARC.

The findings of the “techARC DIGIT” report indicate that there are some users who go on installing apps without much of a thinking and understanding.

Such extremely high installation of apps can not only drain the smartphones in several ways and also impact its performance, but can also expose such users to various vulnerabilities that could be acquired by the device through some apps.

By category, the social media apps lead the usage with 76 per cent of the users using them on a daily basis.

Mobile gaming has gained a lot in the recent times. It stood as the second most-used category with 70 per cent of the users playing one or the other game daily on their smartphones.

Nearly half of the users use financial apps that include banking apps as well as wallet apps to perform one or the other financial transaction digitally, the findings showed.

The over-the-top (OTT) entertainment apps which include live TV, video-on-demand (VoD) and other such apps showing video content is also gaining popularity, with 40 per cent of the users watching content on a daily basis, the research, based on opinions of 1,000 users, showed.

Government needs to act as consumer for faster 5G adoption: Report

Government needs to act as consumer for faster 5G adoption: Report

5GGurugram : When it comes to 5G adoption in India, the government needs to play a big role as a consumer to make it a success, a report said on Monday.

The government needs to be proactive in demand generation as in the enablement of 5G in India, said the report from market research firm techARC.

“The government has a critical role in the demand generation in case of 5G services. The initial feasible use cases are expected to come from organisations including the government,” said Faisal Kawoosa, Founder and Principal Analyst, techARC.

“The government’s role is equally indispensable in the demand creation as in the technology enablement,” he added.

According to the report, there is as important rural applicability of 5G as in urban areas and 5G can increase the digital presence in rural India.

“Make in India” should focus beyond smartphones as a lot of 5G device types will be required other than smartphones.

“Government should not haste in 5G auctions. The ecosystem does not seem to reap from it before 2020,” said the report.

“Considering the preparedness of the telecom ecosystem, the optimal use of 5G can only start after 2020, which is when the spectrum auctions should take place,” said Kawoosa.

A special 5G incubation and startup programme may be launched to encourage startups develop the ecosystem for 5G, the report added.
