EU, China to boost cooperation on climate change

by | May 25, 2021

EU, China to boost cooperation on climate changeBrussels, (NNN-KUNA) : The European Union and China agreed Friday after their summit meeting to step up cooperation on the fight against climate change, and they criticised the US decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement.

“Today, we are stepping up our cooperation on climate change with China. Which means that today, China and Europe have demonstrated solidarity with future generations and responsibility for the whole planet,” President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, told a joint press conference with the Chinese Prime Minister LI Keqiang.

“We are convinced that yesterday’s decision by the United States to leave the Paris Agreement is a big mistake, bigger than not ratifying the Kyoto Protocol, because Paris is fairer. But the fight against climate change, and all the research, innovation and technological progress it will bring, will continue, with or without the US,” he said.

The summit also discussed the issue of human rights, as well as the situation of minorities such as Tibetans and Uighurs and the North Korea crisis, said Tusk.

On his part, LI Keqiang said there have been changes in the international situation and there has been rising uncertainties and destabilising factors.

“It is important that EU-China relations become more stable,” he stressed.
