Central agencies targeting Opposition, will approach EC, President: Akhilesh Yadav

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav Friday said he will approach the Election Commission (EC) and the President of India, alleging that Union government’s agencies are being misused to target the Opposition.

“I will write to the EC and the President of India about how central agencies are being misused to target the opposition and make a mockery of democracy,” former UP CM said.

Akhilesh’s criticisms come after his party MLC and perfume baron Pushpraj Jain was raided by the Income Tax (I-T) department.

“The Centre raided the wrong person earlier. This raid on the SP MLC is an attempt to cover up the earlier mistake,” Yasav alleged, talking about Piyush Jain who was raided earlier and is being probed in an alleged case of tax evasion.

“There is a realisation in Delhi that Yogi will lose the election. And that is why, through raids and other measures, Yogi is being pushed into greater trouble,” Yadav told reporters.

On 26 December, Kannauj-based perfume maker Piyush Jain was raided and recovery of the huge amount of cash stunned the officials. Cash was hidden in underground bunkers, eyewitnesses accompanying the tax officials said. According to the finance ministry, the seizure of ₹177 crore unaccounted cash was the biggest ever seizure of cash by an enforcement agency.

Yadav said Piyush Jain is linked with BJP which the party denied.

“By mistake, the BJP got its own businessman raided. Instead of SP leader Pushpraj Jain, it got Piyush Jain raided,” Akhilesh said.

“Remember, when there were elections in West Bengal, all the agencies of Delhi had reached Bengal. It happened with Stalin in Tamil Nadu and the same thing happened in Bangalore,” Akhilesh said to reporters.
