Bihar: Muslim man lynched in Saran district “on suspicion of transporting beef,” three detained

by | Mar 11, 2023

March 11,2023 : A Muslim man died from his wounds on Wednesday morning in a Siwan hospital after being savagely beaten by a crowd in Bihar’s Saran district the day before on the grounds that he was transporting beef, according to the police.

When the crowd allegedly stopped Naseem Qureshi, 56, and his nephew Firoz Ahmed Qureshi in Jogia village, around 110 kilometres northwest of Patna, they were their route to meet up with some acquaintances. Naseem Qureshi lives in Hasanpur village in the neighbouring Siwan district.

After a similar incident on February 23 in the Gaya district, local sarpanch Sushil Singh and two other people, Ravi Sah and Ujwal Sharma, were detained for lynching.

According to the police, a FIR was filed under Sections 302 (murder), 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention and 379 (theft) of the IPC after a complaint by the Naseem’s nephew Firoz Ahmed Qureshi.

“Both were intercepted by locals near a mosque…and it was followed by a heated argument. While Firoz managed to escape, the mob allegedly thrashed Nazeem with sticks. Later, the mob themselves handed over Naseem to the police in Rasulpur village (Saran), after which he was rushed to a government hospital but died during treatment”, said Gaurav Mangla, Superintendent of Police (SP), Saran.

The SP told PTI over phone, “Three persons have so far been arrested for mob lynching. Police have also launched a manhunt to nab other suspects involved in the case. The case is being investigated from all angles”.

Naseem’s family claims that the police were attempting to protect the accused.

“The local police are trying to save the guilty. The police took my seriously injured brother on a motorcycle instead of an ambulance,” Naseem’s brother Ashraf Qureshi told reporters.
