Kuwait City (IINA) : Yemeni government delegation to UN-brokered peace talks has unilaterally signed an agreement proposed by UN Special Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed to end the armed conflict in the country, giving the other side until August 7 to sign or consider the meetings futile.
After signing the agreement on Monday, the government’s delegation left Kuwait City for Riyadh. Member of the government’s delegation Mueen Abdulmalik said in a statement to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that he expects that the delegations representing the Houthis and Ali Abdullah Saleh would sign the agreement as well. “The return of the government’s delegation to Kuwait hinges on whether the opposing sides sign the agreement, if not, then the talks would be futile,” he said.
Yemeni President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi endorsed the agreement on July 30 and has given the government’s delegation consent to sign, provided that the opposing sides sign the agreement prior to August 7. Meanwhile, in efforts to build up on positive developments, Kuwait has agreed to a UN request to extend the talks until August 7, since a definitive solution to the conflict has yet to be reached.
