New York, (IINA) : US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley recently announced over half a billion dollar budget cut in UN peacekeeping.

The US mission to the UN said in a press release that following a US-led effort, the UN budget committee significantly reduced the annual peacekeeping budget by over half a billion dollars, forcing the UN to work “smarter and more efficiently” in delivering its mandates.

“We have an obligation to the American people to show value in the use of their taxpayer dollars,” said Ambassador Nikki Haley.

“Just five months into our time here, we’ve already been able to cut over half a billion dollars from the UN peacekeeping budget and we’re only getting started.” The press release confirmed that the agreement would also preserve critical UN functions and mechanisms to protect civilians caught in conflict, including many human rights reporting positions.

With such cut, the US was able to reduce the budget to $7.3 billion on peacekeeping in the coming year.
