Turkish investors to come together at summit this week

Turk EximbankBy Gokhan Ergocun,

Ankara: Turkey will host an exporters and investors summit on April 26-27.

The Islamic Development Bank (IDB) and Turk Eximbank will organize the event in the western Izmir city, according to a Tuesday statement.

“The IDB and Turkey’s lead lender for exports and imports, Turk Eximbank, have joined hands to bring in the country’s top-notch exporters and investors together,” the IDB said.

More than 300 Turkish private sector leaders, elite traders, industrialists, entrepreneurs, and investors will discuss past achievements, challenges, and opportunities ahead in the two-day summit.

Economy Minister Nihat Zeybekci, IDB’s president Bandar Hajjar and Turk Eximbank’s CEO Adnan Yildirim will give speeches on the opening day.

Also, panel discussions on various subjects of interest will be held.

Within the scope of the summit, investors, exporters, and contractors would explore how IDB and Turk Eximbank can provide support and assistance to boost Turkish exports and services in the world markets.

Turk Eximbank ranks second globally after South Korea’s Eximbank in terms of financing exports.

Since its establishment in 1987, the bank has implemented international credit, guarantee, and credit insurance programs aimed at developing economic and political ties between Turkey and other countries.

Turkey is a founding member of the IDB, which is an international Islamic financial institution — formally opened in 1975 — to foster the economic development and social progress of member countries and Muslim communities.

Since the establishment of the IDB, the bank has contributed more than $11.2 billion of funding to 483 projects in various sectors in Turkey such as infrastructure, agriculture, health, education, transport, energy, and trade.

Seoul, Pyongyang officials finalise leaders’ summit protocol

Seoul, Pyongyang officials finalise leaders’ summit protocol

Seoul, Pyongyang officials finalise leaders' summit protocolSeoul : Officials from South and North Korea on Monday began a new working-level meeting to finalise the protocol and security measures regarding the historic summit between its leaders scheduled to take place on Friday.

The meeting is being held in the Tongilgak Pavilion, on the northern side of the militarised inter-Korean border, according to the South Korean presidential office.

It is the third such meeting between the representatives of the two countries, since the inter-Korean summit was announced in early March, reports Efe news.

The officials are expected to discuss details of the Friday summit such as the exact time of the meeting between Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in.

Also on the agenda is how Kim will access the summit venue – Peace House – the pavilion on the southern side of the border, a detail of historic importance given that it will technically be the first time a North Korean supreme leader will enter the South.

Monday’s working-level meeting comes after Pyongyang announced over the weekend that it would stop conducting nuclear tests and intercontinental missile launches, marking a significant step ahead of the Kim-Moon summit set to focus on North Korea’s possible denuclearization.

The summit will be the first among Korean leaders in 11 years and the third in history, after the ones held between the late leader and Kim’s father, Kim Jong-il, and the South Korean presidents Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun in 2000 and 2007, respectively.

Another meeting is planned in May between Kim and the US President Donald Trump, which would be the first ever meeting between the sitting heads of the two countries.

Baccouche urges Sarraj to call for holding Arab Maghreb Union summit in Tripoli

Baccouche urges Sarraj to call for holding Arab Maghreb Union summit in Tripoli

Baccouche urges Sarraj to call for holding Arab Maghreb Union summit in TripoliTripoli : Secretary General of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) Taïeb Baccouche met with Head of the Presidential Council of Libya Fayez al-Sarraj in the Libyan capital Tripoli on Sunday.

During the meeting, Baccouche urged Sarraj to call for holding an AMU summit to get the bloc involved more in the Libyan crisis, as Libya now holds the rotating presidency of the AMU. He added that they, at the union, have never stopped attempts and putting forward proposals and initiatives which would serve the aspired integration among the AMU member states.

“I’m really glad to have come to Libya at the time when Libyans are celebrating the seventh anniversary of the February 17 revolution and at the time of marking the 29th anniversary of the Union,” Baccouche said.

He pointed out that the AMU foreign ministers met 34 times so far, and that the culture, education, health and interior ministries held successive meetings, adding that the agreements reached at those meetings were not translated into actions as the AMU Presidency Council has not been holding meetings.

For his part, Sarraj expressed regret for the disruption of the AMU march, stressing that he will work in a practical way through consultation to overcome the obstacles that prevent the summit from being held. He hoped for the member states to respond to his efforts in convening the summit in Tripoli, so it becomes the kick-start of a real activation of the AMU institutions, with the view to serve the Union’s strategy of regional integration.

The Arab Maghreb Union is a trade agreement aiming for economic and future political unity among Arab countries of the Maghreb in North Africa. Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia became members of the bloc after signing the Treaty establishing the AMU on 17 February 1989.

The Union has been unable to achieve tangible progress on its goals due to deep economic and political disagreements among its member states. No high-level meetings have taken place since 3 July 2008[3] and commentators regard the Union as largely dormant.
