New Delhi : Demanding justice for Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Monday began a 12-hour-long fast here with an attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi dubbing him “totally imbalanced”.
A day after Modi addressed a rally in Andhra Pradesh and made a bitter attack on Naidu, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) President sat on the fast in the national capital demanding the Centre to accord Special Category Status (SCS) and fulfil other commitments made in the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014.
Clad in a black shirt to protest the raw deal meted out to the state, Naidu began the ‘Dharma Porata Deeksha’ at the Andhra Pradesh Bhavan here.
“Modi came to Guntur yesterday. He spent so much of time and so much energy to attack and criticise me but not to solve any problem. This is where you are totally imbalanced,” he said.
Naidu said his protest was against the injustice done to the state, to remind the Centre of its promises and to demonstrate the strength of Andhra Pradesh.
Warning the Prime Minister to stop attacks, Naidu said he should act immediately to fulfil the commitments as only “two days were left”. He was apparently referring to ongoing Parliament session, which could be the last session before the Lok Sabha elections.
“If you don’t fulfil the promises you have made, we know how to get it done. This is a matter of self-respect of Andhra. We know how to earn money but whenever somebody hits our self-respect we don’t tolerate. This has been proven in the past.”
He also warned that if the government failed to fulfil the promises, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would face a permanent boycott in Andhra Pradesh.
Naidu recalled that when then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced the SCS for five years, then BJP leaders in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitely and Venkaiah Naidu had insisted for a period of 10 years.
He said Modi at every election rally promised to accord the SCS and claimed that based on this promise TDP had an alliance with the BJP.
The Chief Minister said the Centre had failed to implement the provisions of Bifurcation Act, including funds to bridge the revenue deficit, railway zone in Visakhapatnam, steel plant in Kadapa and petrochemical corridor.
He said the Centre provided only Rs 1,500 crore for development of state capital Amaravati while it was estimated that Rs 5 lakh crore were required over 20 years to build a capital at par with Hyderabad.
Earlier, Naidu along with other TDP leaders paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat and garlanded the statue of B.R. Ambedkar before launching the protest.
Naidu’s cabinet colleagues, MPs, state legislators and leaders of student and employees groups and mass organisations were sitting with him on the fast.
A large number of protesters have also joined Naidu. They reached the national capital by two special trains hired by the state government.
Leaders of several non-BJP parties were expected to meet Naidu and express their solidarity.

Amaravati : Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Friday said the corruption case against YSR Congress Party leader Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy might be back to square one with the bifurcation of the High Court at Hyderabad.
He told reporters here that the division of the court between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana had come at a time when the case against Jaganmohan Reddy was coming to the trial stage.
“Now with the division of the court between two states, the judge will be also transferred and case will have to restart,” said Naidu while indirectly hinting at a conspiracy by the Central government to save the Leader of Opposition.
Jagan, as the YSR Congress chief is popularly known, is the prime accused in the cases relating to alleged investments made by various private firms and individuals in his businesses as a quid pro quo for various favours bestowed on them by the government of his father Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy in undivided Andhra Pradesh between 2004 and 2009.
The High Court at Hyderabad was serving as the common court for both the states since the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014.
The Centre on Wednesday issued a notification which said that Andhra Pradesh will have its own High Court from January 1 at its capital Amaravati while the existing High Court in Hyderabad will become the High Court of Telangana.
Naidu found fault with the Central government for not giving time for the court employees to move from Hyderabad to Amaravati.
He said the Centre should have given 15 days to two months after issuing the notification so that the employees could mentally prepare themselves and necessary arrangements could be made for the buildings for the court and the accommodation of the judges and staff.
“Is this the way Centre should conduct itself,” asked the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief.
He said the High Court would function from the old building of Chief Minister’s Camp Office till the new building was ready. He said suitable accommodation for the judges and court officials was being arranged in hotels and other buildings.

Nanded (Maharashtra)/Hyderabad : A Maharashtra court has issued non-bailable warrants against Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and 14 others in a 2010 case pertaining to an agitation against the Babli Barrage on River Godavari, an official said here.
Judicial Magistrate First Class, Dharmabad Court (Nanded) N.R. Gajbhiye on Thursday issued the NBWs against Naidu and his cabinet colleagues, Irrigation Minister D.U. Rao, Social Welfare Minister G.Kamalakar and 12 others.
The police have been ordered to arrest them and produce them before the court at the next hearing on September 21.
The incident took place when the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) had organised massive protests over what it termed the “illegal constructions” of the Babli Barrage project by the Maharashtra government allegedly to divert Godavari River waters from Telangana region of the then undivided Andhra Pradesh.
At that time Naidu was the Leader of Opposition in the state and along with 40 legislators, had entered the barrage vicinity flouting prohibition orders clamped there.
The police had caned some protesters and later arrested all of them.
Later, as Naidu refused to take bail, he was sent back to Hyderabad by a flight, and subsequently cases were filed against all agitators on various counts.
The court orders came after a petitioner moved the Dharmabad court seeking to know why the earlier arrest warrants were not executed.
The TDP on Thursday reacted sharply to the warrants against Naidu and alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is behind the conspiracy. TDP leader Buddha Venkanna told reporters in Vijayawada that the Bharatiya Janata Party is resorting to witch-hunting.
Naidu’s son and state IT Minister N. Lokesh told the media that while legal opinion on the issue has been sought, the Chief Minister would attend the court hearing next week.
