Expansion to boost Istanbul airport capacity to 41M

Expansion to boost Istanbul airport capacity to 41M

Expansion to boost Istanbul airport capacity to 41MIstanbul: The new building at Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen Airport’s domestic terminal — representing a €26 million ($30.5 million) investment — will boost the airport’s annual passenger capacity to over 40 million, Istanbul’s governor said on Tuesday.

“It started with a capacity of 25 million people, reached 31 million, and now is being raised to 41 million,” Vasip Sahin said at the building’s opening ceremony.

Looking ahead, he added: “With the second runway, this capacity will reach 63 million.”

Ismail Demir, Turkey’s defense industry undersecretary, said that despite the opening of Istanbul’s new airport this fall, the expansion of Sabiha Gokcen will continue.

Set to open on Oct. 29, the upcoming third airport will be the world’s biggest project built from scratch.

In the first phase, the airport will welcome 90 million passengers annually. In the second phase, expected in 2023, the number is projected to rise to 150-250 million.

“We hope the second runway, the second terminal, and the expansion will come one after another,” said Demir.

Ersel Goral, the CEO of Sabiha Gokcen Airport Investment Development and Operation (ISG), said that airport’s passenger traffic grew eightfold over the last decade, last year reaching 31.2 million persons.

“We expect the second runway — which will cost approximately $1 billion — to be completed in 2019,” Goral said.

In the first half of 2018, more than 97.6 million people travelled through airports in Turkey, according to the State Airports Authority (DHMI) Directorate.

Some 1.38 billion people passed through the country’s airports during the last 10 years, said DHMI data.

Istanbul : The Islamic Summit, to be held in Istanbul on Friday, will discuss the positions and steps of Muslim countries to defend the cause of Palestine and Jerusalem through cooperation and solidarity with the Palestinian state and its people.

This came in a statement circulated Thursday by Turkey’s presidential spokesman Dr. Ibrahim Kalin on the Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) at the level of heads of state and government of the member states, under the auspices of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Kalin noted that the summit will discuss the US administration’s violation of international law following the relocation of its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, as well as the serious developments that emerged after the killing of innocent Palestinians participating in peaceful demonstrations in Gaza. He underscored that the issue of Palestine and Israeli occupation does not only concern Islamic countries, but is a common issue for all those who believe in law and justice.

“The Islamic summit will discuss steps to mobilize international public opinion towards ending grievances in Palestine,” the presidential spokesman said.

Istanbul : The Turkish President’s Security and Foreign Policy Adviser Ibrahim Kalin met US National Security Adviser Herbert Raymond McMaster here and discussed issues that are hurting bilateral ties, the Turkish media reported on Sunday.

Joint efforts against terrorism, long-term strategic partnership between Turkey and the US, and the latest developments in the region were among the topics under discussion, Xinhua news agency reported quoting the Hurriyet daily.

The meeting came as Turkey is fighting for Afrin, a district in northwestern Syria being held by US-backed Kurdish militia known as People’s Protection Units (YPG), since January 20. Ankara has threatened to move on to target YPG-held Manbij, while Washington has refused to withdraw the troops from the town as demanded by its NATO ally.

As part of efforts to ease tension in bilateral ties and avoid a direct confrontation in Syria, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is expected to visit Ankara in the coming days, while Turkish and US Defence Ministers are scheduled to meet in Brussels next week.

OIC expects halal products market to grow up to $6.4 trillion by 2019

OIC expects halal products market to grow up to $6.4 trillion by 2019

OIC expects halal products market to grow up to $6.4 trillion by 2019Istanbul : The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) stated that the size of the global halal products market has grown exponentially in the last decade, from $3.7 trillion in 2012 and expected to reach $6.4 trillion by 2019.

This was contained in the statement of OIC Secretary General Dr. Yousef Al-Othaimeen at the opening ceremony of the 5th edition of the OIC Halal Expo and the World Halal Summit held in Istanbul, Turkey, on November 23-25.

OIC Assistant Secretary General for Economic Affairs Ambassador Hameed Opeloyeru, who read out the statement of the secretary general, explained that organizing the annual halal expo is one of the main planks for advancing trade in the OIC. The event affords actors — traders, investors, exporters, the industry guilds and the general public — the opportunity to know the latest halal products in the member states, with a view to promoting halal products and increasing communication between the investors and industry leaders.

He stressed that there was a need for active bodies in the food, halal services, production and marketing sector in the OIC member states to follow a common course to ensure that all specialized bodies unify their standards and issue accreditation certificates for a suitable regulatory environment for these procedures.

Istanbul is hosting the Halal Expo in cooperation with the OIC-affiliated Islamic Centre for the Development of Trade (ICDT), Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC).
