PETALING JAYA : The 12th World Halal Conference 2020 (WHC2020)to be organized by Halal Development Corporation (HDC on October 6 will discuss on the halal industry transiting to the New World Economy within the ‘new normal’ following the global pandemic.

“The coronavirus has reshaped the economic landscape where consumers had to adjust profoundly to new habits being formed during lockdowns and quarantines.  This will continue permanently, changing the consumer behaviour and lifestyle and people across the globe are striving to adapt to a new normal,” said HDC’s Hairol Ariffein Sahari, Chief Executive Officer.

The world has been in a new stage of transformation as consumer demand for hygiene, clean and safe products have soared following the pandemic.  And with the restrictions imposed to curb the spread of the virus, digital commerce has seen a boost as consumers migrate online to get their products and services.

“COVID-19 is a wake-up call for governments, businesses and society as a whole to have a plan to deal with disruptions, notably where the supply chain has been tested during pandemic, to ensure business continuity,” highlight Hairol.

Putting into perspective the evolving of the economic landscape, WHC2020 theme of “Halal Community Driving the New World Economy” will explore the changes that are happening, the transformation that are already in place and needs to put in place as well as exploring into the challenges and opportunities that had arise in the context of sustainable production and consumption.

HDC’s annual World Halal Conference is a global thought leadership platform that assembles the community of practice within the halal ecosystem.  One of the Government’s strategies to make the Malaysia as a global halal hub, it is a platform that brings together Head of Governments, academia and captains of industry to discuss efforts made to facilitate the robust growth of the global Halal Economy.

Hosted by Malaysia’s Ministry of International Trade and Industry, WHC has become an established part of global halal calendar; the international networking of the halal community to explore the opportunities and challenges in the Halal economy.  The conference discusses the current and future state initiatives to chart the pathway and propel the industry to its next growth level.

The hybrid conference, combining virtual and physical event, will focus on a comprehensive discussion on the recalibration of the halal industry post pandemic addressing the various opportunities and challenges, from the government-to-government level, the industry level from the Captains of the Industry and the emerging market.  The panel discussion during the one-day conference are:

Halal industry growth trends are a key economic driver in many countries, with the global halal industry worth projected to be USD3 trillion in 2030.  HDC is setting a benchmark of USD100 billion export value for Malaysia’s products by 2030 by leveraging the agency’s four core products; training, consultancy, Halal Park and Halal Integrated Platform (HIP) to further tap the global halal market.

PETALING JAYA: Halal Development Corporation (HDC) will forge ahead with its 12th World Halal Conference 2020 via hybrid both virtually and physical event on October 6, 2020 in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to its Chief Executive Officer, Hairol Ariffein Sahari, the recent global pandemic has led to consumers shifting towards cleanliness, hygiene and healthy, synonymizing with halalan toyiban, an integral backbone to the halal industry.

“These unfolding of “new normal” in the way the market operates currently is in line with WHC2020 theme of halal community driving the New World Economy, where market changes were brought about by the community and simultaneously pulling forward the New World Economy.”

“And the demand for hygiene and clean products is expected to rise further in the coming days as the result of the growing awareness among consumers,” he went on to say.

“The pandemic has amplified the ongoing shifts in consumers’ behaviour.  It is clear that COVID-19 has accelerated consumers’ transition to digital consumption, fast-tracking the movement towards digital economy,” he added.

He opined that the WHC2020 is well-timed to further discuss and put forward suggestions on how the halal sector should address repercussions resulting from the pandemic, and with digitalisation being intensified, the transition to New World Economy.

And with the consumers’ behavioural changes becoming habits in the long-run, the conference will also look into how to embrace the challenges and opportunities from the increased global demand for halal products and services.

The October 6 conference which will be held both online and offline at Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) event is expected to be launched by the Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin with opening remarks by senior minister, International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.

With a focus topic that will cover on the post-Covid-19 scenario, the conference will feature components such as ambassador panel on empowering the community to drive the economy in the recovery period, captains of the industry panel on responsible consumption and production and driving the growth of the Halal economy through Islamic Finance.

The panel sessions cover issues that are very relevant to the current market shift and will lead to the sharing of ideas to move forward in this recovery mode post pandemic.

The annual World Halal Conference is renowned as a platform where international networking between government heads, scholars, entrepreneurs and industry leaders to explore the opportunities and challenges relating to the Halal Economy setting the directions for the halal industry moving forward.

“WHC2020 will be a hybrid virtual conference.  Travel restrictions globally has made coming to the venue impossible; thus, a virtual platform will allow us to proceed with the conference to include our global partners, delegates and participants to ‘come’.  And there will be real-time questions online during the sessions.”

KUALA LUMPUR – The 11th World Halal Conference 2019 (WHC 2019) is one of the Government’s concerted efforts to propel the international growth of the halal industry, and to make Malaysia a thought leader in the development of Halal industry. Organised by the Halal Industry Development Corporation (HDC) and hosted by Ministry of Economic Affairs, Malaysia, WHC 2019 converges more than one thousand Government representatives, business leaders, halal industry players, entrepreneurs, scholars and stakeholders from all over the world to explore the potential and deliberate on challenges relating to the development of the halal economy.

The conference and parallel sessions will be held on 3 & 4 April 2019 at Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Halal industry has always been of paramount importance to Malaysia as a Muslim-majority country. The Muslim population worldwide translates into a rising international demand for Halal products and services. On Malaysia’s halal performance, he announced that the country’s total halal export value in 2018 amounted to RM40.0 billion, a decrease of RM3.3 billion (7.6%) from the previous year. The halal sectors saw a setback in exports in overall cluster with the exception of the cosmetics and personal care.

Overall, the reduction in halal exports last year were largely contributed by two halal clusters represented by a 50.0% (MYR1.8 billion) decline in palm oil derivatives from MYR3.6 billion the year before and 36.7% drop in industrial chemicals to MYR357.77 million in 2018 from MYR563.54 million previously.

The top importers of Malaysia’s halal products were led by Singapore (RM4.6 billion); China (4.5 billion); Japan (RM2.5 billion); the United States (RM2.4 billion); and Indonesia (RM1.9 billion).

Although it was a challenging period, Malaysia remains resilient and continues to thrive, capable of withstanding these challenges, and progress forth as a Global Halal Hub aspirant through sustainable Halal ecosystem approach related in the Halal Industry Master Plan 2019-2030 (HIMP2.0).
