SC rejects plea seeking ban on ‘Halal’ slaughter of animals as ‘mischievous’

SC rejects plea seeking ban on ‘Halal’ slaughter of animals as ‘mischievous’

supreme court

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday rejected a plea seeking a ban on the ‘Halal’ form of slaughtering of animals. The court observed that the petition was “mischievous in character”.

A bench headed by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul said that court cannot interfere with the food habits of people.

“Court cannot determine who can be a vegetarian or non-vegetarian. Those who want to eat Halal meat can eat Halal meat. Those who want to eat Jhatka meat can eat Jhatka meat,” the bench which also comprised justice Dinesh Maheshwari said.

The Akhand Bharat Morcha organisation had filed a petition saying that  ‘Halal’ slaughter of animals is “extremely painful” and “inhuman”.

It was also pointed out that Jhatka does not cause suffering for animals since it dies instantaneously in such method of slaughter while in Halal, the animal dies a painful death.

Halal is practiced by Muslims, Jhatka method is excercised by Hindus.

The organisation had challenged Section 28 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

The said section provides that killing of animal in a manner required by the religion of any community will not be an offence under the act. Various forms of killing of animals, like Halal in which jugular vein of the animal is severed leading to blood of animal draining out leading to death of animal and Jhatka where animal is killed instantaneously by a single strike of sword to sever the head, are protected by Section 28.

The bench, however, declined to entertain the plea.

“Your petition is mischievous in character,” the top court said.

KUALA LUMPUR: (Press Release) World’s largest halal trade fair, the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) 2020, is set to host Malaysian and global Halal-based businesses at its 17th edition from 1 to 4 April 2020. In this edition, MIHAS will be facilitating the promotion of sustainability practices among Halal-based industry players.

Themed as “Expand Your Halal Horizon”, MIHAS 2020 will gather around 1,260 businesses – both Malaysian and international companies from ASEAN, North East Asia, Central Asia, Middle East, Africa and Americas . In addition, the event is expecting over 35,000 visitors from 90 countries. The congregation is set to be MIHAS largest yet since its inception in 2004.

MIHAS 2020 TO PROMOTE THE VALUES OF SUSTAINABILITY AMONG HALAL-BASED BUSINESSES

Participants of MIHAS will include Halal-certified and trade-ready companies, buyers, leading brands, manufacturers, distributors, and suppliers. Organised by Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), MIHAS 2020 will showcase the strengths of various sectors in Halal namely Food & Beverages, Food Technology Manufacturing, Pharmaceutical, Cosmetics, Logistics, Tourism, Islamic Finance, Digital and Franchise.

According to MATRADE’s Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Wan Latiff Wan Musa, 2020 will be a significant year for Malaysia as it operationalises various plans to drive Malaysia’s sustainability agenda. “Sustainability promotes responsible businesses and good practices that emphasise responsibilities towards the environment, social and governance. This is very much in line with United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals or the SDGs. Halal and sustainability when practiced together will lead to the Halalan Toyyiban lifestyle and we need to articulate this to the world through MIHAS,” Wan Latiff said.

“For example, Halal gives guidelines on the production, processing and handling of products. At the core of the guidelines there is a strong emphasis on being environmentally friendly, well-being of the living, fair and just business practices as well as ethics too. These are what make Halal and sustainability a perfect match for businesses to strengthen their value proposition when selling to the world, while at the same time protecting the world and society. This will definitely give exporters a long-term strategic advantage,” Wan Latiff explained.

Apart from the showcase of Halal products and services at the exhibition, MIHAS will also feature a highly effective business matching platform called International Sourcing Programme (INSP) that has, since 2005, recorded over RM17.2 billion in cumulative trade for its participants.

Other than that, MIHAS 2020 will offer quality networking and learning opportunities through spacious and improved experiential zones and industry-renowned fora as well as talks by experts from various Halal industries.

Last year’s MIHAS saw the introduction of the Modest Fashion Cluster – where a total of 48 companies and associations were highlighted.

“MIHAS 2020 will further strengthen Malaysia’s position as a global halal hub and put forward the economic values of Halal for the world. The prospects for Halal-based businesses continue to be strong. In terms of projections of export for halal products for 2020, the export of halal products this year is expected to grow around 5 per cent,” Wan Latiff added.

Based on DinarStandard’s (State of the Global Islamic Economy Report 2019/20), the global Islamic economy in 2018 was worth USD4.74 trillion and is expected to grow to USD6.66 trillion in 2024. In that report, Malaysia once again leads the Global Islamic Economy Indicator (GIEI), reflecting a robust Islamic Economy ecosystem, with Malaysia leading the pack in pioneering the growth of the Islamic economy in various sectors,” Wan Latiff

MIHAS 2020 will be held from 1 to 4 April 2020 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Returning and new exhibitors as well as visitors can register in MIHAS 2020 at www.mihas.com.my.

Halal, Kosher slaughter methods outlawed in Belgium

Halal, Kosher slaughter methods outlawed in Belgium

MeatBrussels : Belgium’s region of Flanders has begun banning slaughtering animals without first electrically stunning them, which impacts local production of Halal and Kosher meat in the country.

The regional parliament unanimously voted to outlaw the Islamic way of slaughtering animals in June 2017.

Muslims make up 5 percent of Belgium’s total population of 11.50 million, while the Jewish communities make up 0.4 percent.

Earlier this year, the regional government in Lower Austria came under fire in the country and abroad for their plans to limit access to kosher and halal meat, after speculation arose that believers would have to register to buy meat from animals slaughtered according to religious laws. Some associated the legislation, which is directed against animal cruelty, with Nazi rules.

In Germany, religious slaughter methods are generally forbidden, although exceptions can be made. In Austria, it is only permitted to take place at specially approved slaughterhouses, in the presence of a veterinarian.

Debate on restricting these methods has also taken place in Poland, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.

Bosnian leader: Halal products represent an opportunity

Bosnian leader: Halal products represent an opportunity

Bosnian leader: Halal products represent an opportunityBelgrade, Serbia: The chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Bakir Izetbegovic on Friday said halal products presented an opportunity for Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Izetbegovic’s remarks came during his visit to Sarajevo Halal Fair 2018.

“I have very good impressions from the fair. There are many manufacturers from all over the world. Halal products are certainly a chance for Bosnia and Herzegovina, we import 50 percent of food in Bosnia, and 50 percent of our land is unprocessed, and this land is clean, not polluted,” said Izetbegovic.

Izetbegovic said he learned more about halal products during his visit and pointed out that Bosnia boasted a huge market for halal products.

“Halal […] is healthy food for people, but what has particularly impressed me is the halal attitude towards animals. Chickens, cattle etc. are treated in a humane manner. The food they eat is also checked and halal,” said Izetbegovic.

Meanwhile, Amer Bukvic, CEO of Bosna Bank International, the event organizer, said there was a great interest for the fair.

“As you can see, there is a great interest, a large number of people […]. We hope that we have made a new trend and that this will be an overture for a multi-year project where we will bring producers and buyers from all over the world to the Sarajevo halal industry which is one of the fastest growing industries in the world,” said Bukvic.

Sarajevo Halal Fair 2018 — the first-ever halal fair in Sarajevo — hosts around 100 exhibitors from 36 countries.

The fair is to enable the participants from the Balkan countries, including Serbia, Slovenia and Albania, as well as from Turkey, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia and the EU countries to introduce halal food products.

Anadolu Agency is the global communications partner for the three-day event.
