Punjab: Farmer leader Gurnam Singh Charuni launches political party

Gurnam Singh Charuni, one of the prominent faces of the farmers’ protest against Narendra Modi government’s agricultural laws, launched his own political party – Sanyukt Sangharsh Party – on Saturday.

Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Charuni said the party will try to contest all the 117 seats in Punjab. The Assembly polls are expected to be held early next year.

“Policymakers in our country are promoting capitalism. They make policies to favour capitalists not the poor. We will bring good people forward,” the farmers’ leader said at a press briefing in Chandigarh.

Charuni went on to say: “We will push out from politics, those who are looting the poor. We aim to create equality and provide free education and medical treatment.”

Charuni was a core committee member of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha,  an umbrella body of protesting farmers. The historic protest, which lasted for more than a year, came to an end last week.

Charuni who further said his party will have representatives from different communities, introduced them at the press briefing.

Bharatiya Kisan Union leader has been asking farmer outfits from the state to fight the upcoming elections.
