OIC also called on the Indian government to protect the Muslim minority and respect all their religious and social fundamental freedoms, noting that dialogue is the best way to address any issues within national sovereignty

NEW DELHI — The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the largest bloc of 58 Islamic nations, has condemned the “systematic persecution and violence” ramping up against the Muslim community in Assam.

In a Twitter statement on Thursday, the OIC General Secretariat stressed that the media reports are disgraceful and call for a responsible stance by the government and officials in India.

The OIC General Secretariat also called on the Indian government to protect the Muslim minority and respect all their religious and social fundamental freedoms, noting that dialogue is the best way to address any issues within national sovereignty, according to media reports.

The OIC General Secretariat took the note of the Assam police firing during the ‘forcible and arbitrary’ eviction of 800 Muslim families in Sipajhar in Darrang district which claimed at least two lives — Moinul Haque, 27 and Sheikh Farid, 12 and more than 10 injured.

A video of police firing at Moinul Haque has gone viral. The video also shows a photographer, hired by the local administration, jumping and stomping on the lifeless body lying on the ground. The show of brutality has sparked nation-wide outrage with condemnation of the BJP-led state government from all sides.
