The Department of Science and Technology, Government of India (DST) initiated the Synergistic Training Program Utilizing the Scientific and Technological Infrastructure (STUTI) in 2022. This initiative is a two-fold program to create awareness among high school students pursuing science regarding Research and Development equipment facilities in catchment areas by means of short training and popular science events. It also emphasises on capacity building training programmes for postgraduate students, doctoral students, postdoctoral students and faculty members involved in research areas for maximal utilisation of the existing facilities in the country. There are 13 Project Management Units selected by DST and each PMU is organising 22 trainings throughout the year. Jamia Hamdard, one of the PMUs and the nodal centre conducted one of the training programs at Sophisticated Analytical Instrumentation Facility (SAIF), AIIMS New Delhi.
This workshop provided an overview on the use and applications of various instruments and techniques for research students, faculty and personnel from other laboratories and universities; to train technicians for maintenance and operation of sophisticated instruments; and to promote and participate in projects aimed at the development of prototypes of sophisticated instruments or to augment the capabilities of existing instruments. There were around 200 applicants for the program out of which 30 were shortlisted from all over India representing Central, State and Deemed Universities. Candidates were selected based on their eligibility and their need to foster the research area or career growth.
The inaugural function was held on 29th August 2022 at 9:30 AM. The function was attended by Prof. Subrata Sinha, Dean (Academic) AIIMS, Dr. Harish Kumar, Scientist-F (DST R&D Infrastructure), Prof. A Shariff (Head, Dept of Anatomy), Prof. TC Nag (Co-ordinator, SAIF, New Delhi, AIIMS) Prof. Suhel Parvez (Co-ordinator, Jamia Hamdard PMU) and Dr. Suchita Lokhande (Scientist C, DST R&D Infrastructure). Prof T.C. Nag welcomed the dignitaries, colleagues and the participants to the program. In his speech he emphasized on the objectives of the training and the importance of how the technical sessions are carefully planned so that it would be worthwhile for the participants to know the techniques in detail via interactions with the experts. Dr. Harish Kumar urged the students to become scientific ambassadors not only for this Workshop but also for other DST STUTI programmes as well. Prof. Subrata Sinha, Prof. A. Sharif and Prof. Suhel Parvez also addressed the gathering and wished the participants the very best. Vote of Thanks was proposed by Dr. Subhash Chandra Yadav, Organising Secretary, AIIMS. He told the participants of how due to their credentials they are one of the 30 participants and that they should take this training program seriously for their own benefits. He thanked DST for providing the opportunity to organise such training programs and also thanked each one of them present in the programme. The inaugural function ended with the participants introducing themselves and high tea.
The lectures by eminent scientists from prestigious Institutes and practical sessions by excellent technical team of SAIF facility at AIIMS delivered by renowned faculties and scientists on various topics which included transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, sample preparations which involved fixation, infiltration, embedding and finally viewing the highly magnified images of the samples. The lectures delivered detailed information regarding each and every aspect of the microscopy techniques. After every class, students got the opportunity to ask their queries and doubts which were explained by the faculties. On the last day tests which included subjective and objective questions were conducted to assess the knowledge gained through this training. Grades in the certificates were given according to their performance in the test. Valedictory function was conducted after completing the test and certificates were distributed to all the 30 participants.
Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard Professor (Dr.) M. Afshar Alam informed that STUTI intends to build human resources and its knowledge capacity through open access S&T Infrastructure across the country which in turn helps in Nation building. This program will go a long way in capacity building and will be a platform for new incumbents to build a good overview about their research. He ensured an active participation of Jamia Hamdard in future programmes of STUTI.
