Dhaka University dean resigns after student protest over Quran recitation ban

by | Aug 20, 2024

Professor Dr. Abdul Bashir has resigned from his role as Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Dhaka University (DU). He submitted his resignation letter to the Vice-Chancellor on Monday, stating, “I am resigning from the post of dean of the Faculty of Arts. Please take the necessary measures in this regard.”

Earlier that day, students assembled in front of the Arts Faculty at 11:30 am, demanding Dr. Bashir’s resignation. AB Jubayer, co-coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement, was among the protesters.

Jubayer accused Dr. Bashir of targeting students and attempting to penalize those who participated in a Quran recitation program during Ramadan. He also claimed that Dr. Bashir had issued a show-cause notice to the Chairman of the Arabic Department related to the same issue.
