The restaurant meanwhile said to have stopped the woman in hijab it is taking action against the manager said to have stopped the woman from entering the premises
NEW DELHI— An Indian restaurant in Bahrain has been shut down following an order from the country’s tourism authorities over the allegations that it denied entry to a woman wearing Hijab.
Reports said that Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA) has opened an investigation into the alleged incident that took place at Lantern restaurant run by an Indian in the Adliya area in the country’s capital Manama.
“We reject all actions that discriminate against people, especially regarding their national identity,” BTEA said.
The restaurant meanwhile issued a statement saying that the manager who is said to have stopped the woman in hijab from entering the premises is being suspended “as this does not represent who we are”.
“Everyone is welcome to Lanterns as how it has been for more than 35 years that we have been serving all nationalities in the beautiful Kingdom of Bahrain,” the restaurant said in a statement released on Instagram, inviting people of Bahrain to have complimentary food at the restaurant on March 29 “as a goodwill gesture”.
The incident comes at a time of row over ban on hijab in schools and colleges in south India’s Karnataka state.
Weeks back the High Court upheld the government order that prohibits Muslim girls from wearing hijab in classrooms. The order was issued after Hindu students and Hindutva groups opposed hijab using the excuse that it violates uniform.
