Cairo (IINA) : Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit discussed with Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) José Graziano da Silva ways of enhancing cooperation between the two organizations, particularly on food and water security issues.
During the meeting on the sidelines of the 40th FAO Conference, currently being held in Italy’s capital Rome, Aboul-Gheit expressed his appreciation for the efforts being made by the UN agency to provide food assistance to Arab citizens in countries facing humanitarian crises or armed conflicts, including Syria, Libya, Yemen and Somalia.
The secretary general reviewed the efforts being exerted by the General Secretariat of the Arab League in this regard, expressing the hope that the coming period will witness improvement in the size and level of cooperation between the Arab League and FAO in the area of providing food assistance, the Secretary General’s spokesman Mahmoud Afifi, said in a statement on Tuesday.
For his part, FAO director general presented the most important plans, programs and activities carried out by the UN agency in the Arab region. He underscored the pivotal coordination with the Arab League, and the FAO’s full commitment to support the General Secretariat and the Arab countries in areas related to achieving food and water security.
