The UPSC 2014 civil services results have been declared, top 4 positions go to women and the record 37 Muslim candidates cracked the results.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced yesterday the results of its civil services exam which was held on 24 August last year and it is for the first that within 4 days of completion of the process of interview the final list of future civil servant of the 2014 batch has been cleared.

The most striking outcome of the results is the fact that all top 4 ranks have been occupied by women candidates; namely Ira Singhal, Renu Raj and Nidhi Gupta and Vandana Rao. Suharsha Bhagat on the 5th rank is the most successful male candidate in the top slots.

Ira Singhal who topped the list is a physically challenged person but she succeeded under general category. She is presently working as an IRS officer and her success will be a kind of her promotion to a higher rank.

9.4 lakh aspirants filled the form for the 2014 examination, only half of them, 4.5 lakh, appeared in the preliminary. Nearly 17,000 candidates qualified for the interview whereas 3,038 of the interviewed candidates were recommended for personality test and finally 1,236 fortunte ones got through the selection of the most sought after bureaucratic positions in the country.

According to Jamia Journal, 19 trainees of “Residential Coaching Academy (RCA) run by the Centre for Coaching and Career Planning (CC&CP), Jamia Millia Islamia, have been finally selected for country’s most coveted civil services.” Out of these candidates, 14 are non-Muslims by faith.

It should be noted that for last few years the number of Muslim candidates getting through the UPSC civil services exam is generally increasing but their overall ratio remains almost the same, just around 3% of all selections. In 2009, 21 Muslims got through the IAS and Allied which gradually went up to 34 last year and now this figure has further ascended to 37 in the present results.

Out  of the total Muslims selected, 5 are women including the topper of the community B. Fouzia Tarannum who ranked 31st in the overall list.
