Opposition parties walk out after Amit Shah’s statement on Nagaland killings

Several Opposition parties including Congress, DMK, SP, BSP, NCP walked out after Home Minister Amit Shah delivered a statement on the Nagaland incident in Lok Sabha on Monday.

In a statement, Shah pointed out that the vehicle, carrying the six civilians who were gunned down in an area between Tiru and Oting village in Nagaland’s Mon district on Saturday evening, was signalled to stop but it tried to flee. Following this, it was fired upon by the security forces, who had mistaken the civilians as extremists.

The Lok Sabha has been adjourned till tomorrow.

In Rajya Sabha, while Shah was making the statement, Opposition members kept raising slogans against the government.

Earlier in the day, several Opposition MPs condemned the killing of civilians in Nagaland’s Mon and demanded an independent inquiry.

14 civilians were killed in open firing by the Indian Army in Nagaland’s Oting village on Saturday. At least six people were killed after security forces fired at a truck carrying coal-mine workers, who were mistaken for “militants”. Seven more civilians were killed after local residents clashed with the security forces later on Saturday evening.

The Nagaland Police has lodged an FIR against the paramilitary forces, stating the intention of the security forces was to “murder and injure civilians.”

“At around 1530 hours, coal mine labourers of Oting village were returning to their native village Oting from Tiru in a vehicle Bolero pick up. On reaching at Longkhao between Upper Tiru and Oting village, security forces blankly opened fire at the vehicle without any provocation resulting to the killing of many Oting villagers and seriously injuring many others (sic),” read the FIR against 21st Para Military Force.

A total shutdown has been imposed in capital Kohima after locals protested against the army personnel.
