Cairo : Almost 80 per cent of Yemeni people need urgent humanitarian aid, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the UN said in a report on Thursday.
The report, presented in Cairo, stressed that Yemen was suffering the worst famine in the Middle East and North Africa.
FAO added that almost a quarter of the Yemeni people were suffering severe food insecurity while 36 per cent of the population faced moderated food insecurity, Efe news reported.
The severe malnutrition index between children under five years of age reached 11 per cent but surpassed 15 per cent in at least four Yemeni provinces. The FAO regarded this situation as critical.
Sanitary services degraded leading to a cholera epidemic, which resulted in at least 2,028 deaths with nearly 580,000 suspected cholera cases.
The water supply also degraded due to the war prompting violence.
The FAO said 4,000 violent deaths took place in disputes over water or lands annually, citing the Yemeni Interior Ministry.
The conflict in Yemen erupted in late 2014 when the Houthi rebels gained control of the capital Sana’a and much of Yemen’s northern provinces.
The Yemeni conflict gained an international dimension when a Saudi-led coalition started to target Houthi rebels in March 2015.
In another regional issue, the FAO stated that war-torn Syria needed between $11-17 billion to recover garden patches and its agricultural infrastructures.
The report added that food production reached some of the lowest levels in Syria prompting problems in supplying near half of the population in Syria with food.

Riyadh : Saudi Arabia on Monday accused Iran of supplying ballistic missiles to the Houthi rebels in Yemen and called it a blatant act of military aggression.
In a statement, the command of Saudi Arabia-led coalition forces in Yemen, said that an analysis of the remains of the missiles that were launched on Saturday against Riyadh confirmed they were made in Iran, reports Efe news.
“The coalition command considers this a blatant act of military aggression by the Iranian regime and could be considered an act of war against the kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”
The spokesperson for the Arab coalition Turki Almalik, had claimed on Sunday that the ballistic missile attack against Riyadh was manufactured in Iran.
The statement stressed it is Saudi Arabia’s legitimate right to defend its territory and people according to the UN charter and to respond to Iran at an appropriate time and manner.
Following the missile attack by the rebels, the coalition forces also decided to temporarily shut down all land, air and sea ports in Yemen.
On Saturday, the Houthi rebels had launched a ballistic missile against Riyadh that was intercepted near the Saudi capital by the armed forces.
The rebel-controlled Yemeni news agency SABA had said the missile was targeted at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh.
The Shiia Houthi rebels, backed by Iran, frequently fire shells at the Saudi Arabian border near the frontier, and on several occasions, have launched ballistic missiles that fell close to Riyadh.
Saudi Arabia leads the coalition of Sunni Arab countries that have been intervening in the Yemen conflict since March 2015 in support of Yemeni President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi.

Hassan Rouhani
Tehran : Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Tuesday urged Saudi Arabia to give up what he called the kingdom’s “interference” in Yemen’s internal affairs.
“Saudi Arabia should leave the Yemen’s affairs to its people,” Rouhani said in a live broadcast from the state IRIB TV.
If the Saudi officials stop their intervention in Yemen and give up their support to terrorism in the region, the relations between Iran and the Arab state will return to its normal track, Rouhani said.
He stressed that dialogue would be the best way for settling disputes between Tehran and Riyadh.
Iran’s dispatch of the pilgrims to Saudi Arabia for annual Hajj ceremony in Mecca is an indication of Iran’s will for resolving the issues, he pointed out.
The Yemeni war pits Iranian-allied Shiite Houthi rebels, backed by forces loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, against the government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, which is backed by the Saudi-led Arab coalition.
The capital Sanaa and most of the northern provinces have been under control of Houthi rebels since September 2014.
The war has so far killed more than 10,000 Yemenis, half of them civilians, and displaced over two million others, according to UN humanitarian agencies.

Kuwait City, (IINA) – Yemen’s government suspended its participation in talks with rebels on Tuesday for the second time this month, in a new setback to the UN-backed peace process, Arab News reported.
Yemen’s Foreign Minister Abdulmalek Al-Mikhlafi said on Twitter that the Houthi militia, which controls the capital, had “torpedoed the talks completely”, by backtracking on their commitments after a month of negotiations.
“I have asked the UN envoy not to allow the rebels to waste any more time… and to make them comply with the reference issues before we resume the talks”, said Mikhlafi, who heads the government delegation.
A statement by the government delegation said it would continue to boycott the talks until the rebels comply with the agreed references.
It also urged the international community to apply pressure on the rebels to implement international resolutions to end the war and held them responsible for obstructing the peace negotiations.
The statement blamed the Houthis of destroying the country’s economy, refusing to respect the ceasefire and to implement UN Security Council resolutions.
In particular, the government wants the Houthis to comply with a UN Security Council resolution ordering them to pull out of territory they occupied in a 2014 offensive and surrender heavy arms they captured. Sources close to the government and rebel delegations confirmed to AFP that a session scheduled to take place on Tuesday morning was canceled after the government delegation withdrew.
It is noteworthy that the two delegations were on the verge of finalizing a deal to release half of the detainees and prisoners before the start of the fasting month of Ramadan.
