Saba Industries to invest $100 mn in rice sector in India, Thailand

Saba Industries to invest $100 mn in rice sector in India, Thailand

grainNew Delhi : Malaysia-based Saba Industries Chairman and CEO Malini Saba on Wednesday said the privately-held company will invest $100 million in the rice sector in India and Thailand, as it plans to export the staple by partnering with local farmers.

“We are looking at a $100 million investment between Thailand and India. And based on how much more money we need to pump in, we will do that in the next phase. We plan to start our first phase in Uttar Pradesh,” Saba told IANS during her visit to India.

The global exporter of agricultural commodities plans to enter warehousing and drying space in India’s rice sector. The Kuala Lumpur-based firm will set up about 10 warehouses in Uttar Pradesh and as many dryers with an aim to dry 1,000 tonnes rice per day.

“In the initial 2-3 years, we plan to focus on Uttar Pradesh, partnering with the farmers there. As we did in other south-east Asian countries, we plan to support the farmers in India with farm equipment and fertilisers for free and procure their rice and get it processed at local mills.

“To start with, we are looking at exporting 20,000 to 25,000 tonnes of rice, particularly Basmati, per month. We have a ready clientele in the US, Middle East and other parts of the world,” Saba said.

Farm equipment will help farmers plant and harvest paddy faster, she said.

The founder of the $650-million company also deals in mining of iron ore and gold.

“Transportation and warehousing are the major challenges in the agriculture sector in most countries like India. One of the things we discovered in India is that the drying capacity is quite limited despite the presence of a number of mills. We plan to get in large dryers with capacities ranging from 10,000 to 20,000 tonnes a month,” she said.

After Uttar Pradesh, the company will replicate the model in Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal and later to other states to scale up its operations in India.

Thailand gears up for second day of cave rescue

Thailand gears up for second day of cave rescue

Thailand gears up for second day of cave rescueBangkok : Thai authorities on Monday were preparing for the second day of the rescue of the remaining nine boys trapped for more than two weeks in a cave in northern Thailand following a successful first operation in which four were taken out alive.

Narongsak Osottanakorn, official spokesperson for the operations, said on Sunday night in a press conference that the rescue teams would resume their tasks between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., on Monday, reports Efe news.

Rescue personnel needed to replace the compressed air cylinders used for the more than 4 km route and re-evaluate conditions in the partially flooded cave located in the northern province of Chiang Rai.

Four of the 13 schoolboys and their coach were rescued on Sunday and taken to the Chiang Rai provincial hospital where they are under evaluation.

The first boy came out at 5.40 p.m. and the second followed 10 minutes later while the other two came out after more than two hours.

The other eight boys and their coach remain in the cave where they were found on June 2 after a search and rescue mission that began 16 days ago.

Thailand shuts down tourism in Tachai island to protect environment

Thailand shuts down tourism in Tachai island to protect environment

thailandBangkok, (IANS) Thai authorities have decided to close down tourism in Tachai Island in the Andaman Sea, to protect the coral and underwater flora and fauna in one of the country’s key diving destinations, an official said on Monday.

“The island is closed for an indefinite time. Too many tourists have visited it. They have destroyed the ecology and corals of the island,” Efe news quoted the official as saying.

The island will no longer be accessible to tourists after October 15 and the committee managing Similan National Park will evaluate the situation to determine when the recovery period is over.

The measure, however, excludes two diving centres operating in the area, because deep sea diving has a minimal impact on the environment and tourists are educated not to damage nature, said the official.

The freshwater golden snail and the hermit crab that uses the snail’s shell for shelter are just two of the species that have been affected by tourism, according to the official.

“When it reopens, we plan to adopt more stringent measures” to control the volume of tourists, he said.

Although Tachai lacks hotel infrastructure and opened its doors to tourism in 2010, its landscape, beaches and location within the Similan National Park — about 620 km northwest of Phuket — have rapidly turned it into a tourist hotspot.

Thailand recorded 29.9 million tourists in 2015 and the numbers are expected to surge up to 35 million in 2016 if tourism continues its current pace, according to data from the Tourism Department.
