Mumbai Press Club condemns killing of journalist Gauri Lankesh

Mumbai Press Club condemns killing of journalist Gauri Lankesh

Gauri LankeshCandle light vigil today at 7 PM

The Mumbai Press Club expresses a serious concern over the killing of senior journalist Gauri Lankesh who was shot dead outside her home in Bangalore on Tuesday evening.

Ms Lankesh, 55, was shot dead by unidentified men from close range; three bullets hit her, one on the forehead, reported news agency IANS.

We request the governments of Karnataka to order CBI investigation into this sordid killing of a member of the Fourth Estate. The Club also demands that the Karnataka government should ensure that the culprits are subjected to maximum punishment – be it the foot-soldiers or the masterminds.

Ms Lankesh was the editor of weekly ‘Gauri Lankesh Patrike,’ a Kannada tabloid. Like her father, who was a noted Kannada writer, Gauri Lankesh faced opposition and criticism of her journalism.

Ms Lankesh is survived by her mother, her sister Kavitha Lankesh and brother Indrajit who runs Lankesh Patrike.

At the time of crisis, we stand behind the family and condemn the killing in strongest possible words and urge for speedy investigation and trial.

If this is how the Fourth Estate is going to be treated by the powers that be, while the government looks the other way, it is indeed a black hour for Indian democracy.

-Candle light vigil today at Club

Mumbai Press Club, in alliance with other media organisations, will hold a candle light vigil Today (6th September) at 7 pm seeking justice for our colleague. We all will meet  at the gates of the Press Club where will hold a candle light vigil along with the portraits of the slain journalist.

All members are requested to attend the candle light vigil.

Looking forward to your support for strengthening journalist rights and unity!

MUMBAI PRESS CLUB CONDEMNS BAN ON NDTV INDIA

MUMBAI PRESS CLUB CONDEMNS BAN ON NDTV INDIA

press-club-mumbaiMumbai: The Mumbai Press club which represents over 2,500 journalists, strongly and unequivocally condemns the ban by the Union Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B) on the Hindi news channel NDTV India for purportedly airing “sensitive information” in respect of the Pathankot attack by terror groups near the border. The Club also demands that the ban, imposed for one day on 9 November, should be withdrawn forthwith.

NDTV India in its response to a show cause by the government has said that channel did not report anything which other channels and newspapers had not covered simultaneously. It is therefore mischievous to singles out a particular channel for such penal action.

Though there are various legal options available for the government in the Indian Court of Law for any irresponsible media coverage, the I&B ministry action of banning against a specific TV channel that has been critical of the government, and has done serious ground reporting on the views of the common man, does not augur well for freedom of expression of the country.

The I&B ministry’s order imposing the ban is vague and also does not disclose what specific clips or information can be termed ‘sensitive’ and ‘useful to the enemy’.

Any penal actions like the ban of NDTV India that infringes on media operating and reporting freely will be stoutly resisted by media persons everywhere.

Mumbai Press Club demands CBI enquiry into mysterious death of journalist Akshay Singh

Mumbai: The Mumbai Press Club demands an immediate CBI inquiry into the mysterious death of Aaj Tak reporter Akshay Singh. Any delay in ordering the probe will only strengthen the perception that India is sinking to the depths of another ‘failed’ Banana Republic.

Like others, who have died under mysterious circumstances, Akshay’s death needs to be probed by the CBI rather than Madhya Pradesh’s SIT, which depends on the state police for inputs and information. Nothing short of ordering a CBI probe into Akshay’s death is acceptable. We also urge Prime Minister Narendra Modi to break his silence on this perplexing and tragic issue.

Mumbai Press Club also deeply mourns the death of Akshay Singh, special correspondent of Aaj Tak, who died investigating and reporting the Vyapam scam at Ujjain, in Madhya Pradesh. We stand by the Dahod-based family of Singh, who was just 38.

Whatever may be the autopsy report, the case should not be treated as normal as we over the last one month have seen reports of many similar and unnatural deaths of people connected with the Vyapam scam, be it witnesses, accused, suspects, investigators and beneficiaries.

The death of Akshay has come at a time when the journalist fraternity is yet to come to terms with the burning to death of Jagendra Singh of Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh and Sandeep Kothari of Balaghat in Madhya Pradesh, whose burnt body was found in Wardha district of Maharashtra. The two back-to-back similar incidents have come as a shock and a wake up call for all media persons.

Mumbai Press Club also demand an immediate sacking of MP minister Kailash Vijayvargiya who has been accused of showing appalling insensitivity with his dismissive comment on Akshay.

On its part, the Mumbai Press Club has taken the lead in helping file a case in the Supreme Court demanding a CBI Inquiry and is in touch with different journalist associations, organisations, federations and bodies in UP and New Delhi. The Club will also be extending some financial assistance to the bereaved families of the dead journalists.

The Mumbai Press Club has also set up a fact-finding team in collaboration with the Nagpur Union of Working Journalists to visit Nagpur, Wardha and Balaghat and investigate the brutal murder of journalist Kothari.
