Mukesh Ambani aims to become India’s 1st Internet tycoon: The Economist

Mukesh AmbaniNew Delhi : After a successful run with Jio which decimated the rival telecom players and has empowered 28 crore users in India till date, Reliance Industries Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani now wants to become India’s first Internet tycoon, according to The Economist.

“With his service Jio, he has upended Indian telecoms and changed his country. Now he wants to go further and become Indian Jeff Bezos or Jack Ma, using Jio as a launch pad,” said The Economist in its latest January 26 edition.

India’s mobile phone customer base reached 1.17 billion in November last year, according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The broadband user base crossed 500 million users and nearly 97 per cent of them are on wireless connections.

Jio alone has created a mega base of 28 crore subscribers with ultra-cheap data plans.

“His ambition to become a tech tycoon goes beyond making money in telecoms. RIL has already invested in content creation, and has bought rights to distribute cricket matches and Disney films on its ‘Jio TV’ platform,” added the report.

Addressing the “Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2019” on January 18, Mukesh Ambani announced that Reliance would double its investment and employment numbers over the next decade.

Urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to lead a fight against “data colonisation,” he said Reliance Jio and Reliance Retail would soon launch a new commerce platform for small retailers — a mega mission which will first be launched in Gujarat and then across the country.

Reliance Jio Infocomm last week reported a 65 per cent increase in its standalone net profit for the October-December 2018 period.

Its standalone net profit stood at Rs 831 crore in the third quarter of the financial year 2018-19, against Rs 504 crore reported in October-December 2017-18.

Reliance to invest additional Rs 3,000 cr in Odisha

Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL)Bhubaneswar : Reliance Industries Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani said on Monday the group, which has already invested Rs 6,000 crore in Odisha over the last few years, will invest an additional Rs 3,000 crore in the state.

“Today, Reliance has emerged as one of the largest investors in the state in the last few years. Reliance has already invested over Rs 6,000 crore in the state. And today, I am committing to invest an additional Rs 3,000 crore in our new businesses in Odisha,” he said at the Make in Odisha Conclave here.

The additional investments would be made in the next three years.

“Most of our investments are in creating the Jio network. For Reliance, Jio is not just another business. It is a mission to transform India — to transform Odisha. We have created sustained new employment opportunities, both direct and indirect, to over 30,000 people in the state,” he said.

Since Reliance Jio commenced operations little over two years ago, India has moved from the 155th rank in mobile broadband penetration to being the number one nation in mobile data consumption in the world, he said.

“We are committed to connecting everyone and everything, everywhere always with the highest quality and the most affordable price. I have a big reason for focusing on digital business.
The world is at the cusp of a digital revolution,” Ambani said.

He also said the group is taking another step to propel Odisha further into the digital future.

“With JioGigaFiber, we have now begun an ambitious push in fixed broadband through fiber-to-the-home and premise.

“Our aim and resolve is to ensure that India rises from the present 135th rank to be amongst the top three nations in fixed broadband within the next three years,” Ambani said.

India on track to feature among 3 richest countries: Mukesh Ambani

Mukesh AmbaniNew Delhi : Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani on Tuesday said India is on its way to feature among the three richest countries in the world.

Speaking at the MobiCom 2018 here, he said contrary to general expectations the country has recovered well from global economic slowdown in the past few years.

“Today our GDP is nearing $3 trillion, and India is well on its way to becoming one of the three richest countries in the world,” the RIL Chairman said.

Ambani also said that in the next two decades India would lead the world and contribute to the next wave of global economic growth.

On advancement in digital technology, Ambani said that in India “the transformative power of digitisation is breaking new ground every day”. India’s digital transformation is unmatched and unprecedented, he added.

Outlining the tasks ahead in the digital technology space, he observed that it is a major task to ensure that new technologies create more employment opportunities than the amount of job losses they cause.

A major task is “to ensure that new and disruptive technologies create more employment opportunities than they take away,” Ambani said.

Although, he expressed optimism regarding employment opportunities, he said that there is apprehension in the society regarding the same and these apprehensions may delay the process of digital transformation.

“These very apprehensions could resist or delay digital transformation of our societies. That would be a mistake,” he noted.

Ambani further emphasised that, governments, businesses and civil society organisations should put together an ecosystem for massive upskilling of workforce.

“Significantly, most of the upskilling can happen on digital platforms.”

Apart from employment, the RIL Chairman said the country also needs to prepare for a period of information and digital abundance and adopt to the pace of innovation. He also stressed on the need to shift from a system of time-bound education to a mode of continuous learning.

Regarding India’s global ranking in the broadband segment, Ambani said that the country is currently ranked low at 134th position and RIL’s Jio would take the ranking to the top three.

“Jio is determined to move India to among the top three in fixed-line broadband.”

Ambani had in July, at RIL’s Annual General Meeting, announced that it would launch fibre-to-the-home broadband services, JioGigaFiber.

On prospects of India leading the world in the “fourth industrial revolution”, Ambani on Tuesday mentioned that democracy is one of the factors which would help the country champion in the digital revolution.

“India is a democracy and is run on the model of equitable and inclusive growth with a society-wide culture of empathy. And it is openly embracing the digital technologies of tomorrow,” he said.

With “world-class digital infrastructure”, each one of the 1.3 billion people of India can productively participate in the fourth industrial revolution, he noted.

“We can solve the biggest unsolved problems facing humanity right here in India.”
