Education a solution to terrorism, global warming: Sisodia

New Delhi : Delhi Education Minister Manish Sisodia on Monday said the solution to the menace of terrorism and global warming will be found through education only.

“The time has come when all Education Ministers put their heads together to assure the country that they will bring a solution to terrorism through education,” Sisodia said while addressing the 65th meeting of Central Advisory Board for Education at Vigyan Bhavan here.

He said the Ministers should assure the country that they will impart such education to children that ensures that no educated individual under any circumstances chooses terrorism.

Sisodia lauded the central government for focusing on ‘learning outcomes’ across the country.

At the same time, he said that learning outcomes cannot be achieved by merely drawing up such lists.

He asked on National Council of Educational Research and Training, Central Board of Secondary Education and all state governments to promptly reduce syllabi in all subjects by 50 per cent so that teachers shift their attention to learning outcomes.

“As long as the sword of syllabi completion hangs over teachers they can never shift their attention to learning outcomes,” he said.

Sisodia said the Delhi government was speeding up the process of installing closed-circuit televisions in every classroom of state-run schools and to provide all teachers with tablets.

Compete with Dellhi’s education growth, Sisodia asks BJP, Congress ruled states

Manish Sisodia

New Delhi : Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Wednesday challenged the state governments led by BJP and Congress to compete with his state’s education “revolution”.

He also challenged the BJP-ruled MCDs for a comparison with the schools of the Delhi government.

“Compete with the work done in education sector by our government. Let’s start today and then compare after a year or two. This competition will ultimately benefit the students of the country providing them with good schools,” Sisodia, who also holds the Education portfolio, told media here.

His remarks come in the wake of criticism that his government received from the opposition on its performance in the field of education among others.

State BJP chief Manoj Tiwari on November 24 said that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal failed to deliver on his poll promises that he would improve education, while Congress’ Delhi unit President Ajay Maken also slammed the Delhi government, saying the number of students and its results have gone drastically down in last three years.

Sisodia hit back on Wednesday claiming that government schools are being shut down and private schools are increasing in states led by BJP and Congress.

“I appreciate that the important matter of education is being discussed by the politicians who keep discussing issues of ‘shamshan’ and ‘kabristaan’,” he said.

He further said that both BJP and Congress “did nothing in the education sector” and rather played in the hands of the private school lobby.

Referring to the data of the Education Department, he said that the transition loss from Class 10 to Class 12 came down in the two years of AAP’s rule in Delhi.

“While the transition loss in 2013-14 was 6,2,158, it has come down 2016-17 to 1,8,405.”

He also pointed towards the increase in expenditure on school infrastructure, which, he said, has gone up to Rs 1,229 crore in 2016-17 from Rs 210 crore in 2012-13.

“We changed the way education sector worked in Delhi. The schools which were dilapidated and were not maintained, get whitewashed every year now, and drinking water and sanitation has been taken care of.

“Four-five years back when we started talking on wide-spread corruption, the political discourse shifted from caste, religion to issues like corruption. I am sure education will become a topic in national politics in the coming years,” he added.

DMRC not sharing ridership details after fare hike: Sisodia

New Delhi : Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Saturday said that the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) was refusing to share details of Metro ridership following its fare hike.

Sisodia said that according to preliminary reports, there has been an increase of 65,000 in the ridership of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses after the fare hike.

“If metro is only for a premium class of Delhi, then what is the point of using thousands of crores of tax money of Delhi’s citizens for it?” he asked.

He questioned why the Centre was not allowing an inquiry into the hike.

The fares were increased from Tuesday despite strong opposition from the Delhi government, which had locked horns with the DMRC over the hike — the second this year.

Addressing the media on Saturday, Sisodia asked why a company like DMRC has a problem with sharing ridership data after the fare hike.

AAP leaders had earlier claimed that increasing fares would result in a fall in ridership.

Referring to an inquiry ordered into the hike, Sisodia said: “BJP should answer this: What did BJP do in the last three years that they have a problem with an inquiry?”

Earlier, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had directed Chief Secretary M. M. Kutty to order an inquiry into the Metro fare hike.

But the central government opposed the move.

“State Government has no authority to make an inquiry into the DMRC’s affairs,” a letter from the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to Kutty read.

On Friday, the Delhi government said that Kutty refused Kejriwal’s direction to order an inquiry and added that he was working at the behest of the BJP.

The Deputy Chief Minister said that even if the central government does not allow an inquiry, a Delhi Assembly appointed committee will look into the fare hike.

Sisodia said that the metro fare hike was a conspiracy to hide a scam.

BJP has driven India’s economy into ground: Sisodia

Manish Sisodia

Manish Sisodia

New Delhi : Delhi Finance Minister Manish Sisodia on Wednesday said that BJP has driven India’s economy into ground and currently GDP growth rate is lowest since 2014, private investment is lowest in 25 years, and job creation in lowest in eight years.

Addressing media here, Sisodia said that demonetisation, the “botched-up” GST rollout and ‘raid raj’ has led to this situation.

“Yashwant Sinha has today reiterated what many leading economists have been saying in recent months – Indian economy is already a mess and it is further headed for disaster,” Sisodia said, referring to an article written by the former Union Finance Minister in the first NDA government.

Sisodia said that from thee fastest growing economy, the Modi government has thrown the Indian economy into a free fall, which will have disastrous consequences for the country.

“Modi promised to create one crore jobs every year and launched Skill India, Startup India and Make in India. None of these have worked so far, as official figures from the Labour Bureau show that only 1.55 lakh jobs were created in 2015 and 2.31 lakh jobs in 2016,” he said.

The minister said that strong economies cannot be built on a foundation of fear and intolerance.

“However over the last three years, a climate of hate and intolerance is being systematically propagated by the ruling party. Journalists are being killed, media has become a state puppet and opposition parties are being victimised through state institutions,” he said.

Sisodia said that Modi government should take immediate corrective measures to save the country from an economic disaster.

He added that the central government must consult all stakeholders, including elected state governments on how to salvage the situation.

GST committees for resolving traders’ issues soon, says Sisodia

Manish Sisodia

Manish Sisodia

New Delhi : Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Tuesday said that his government will soon form Goods and Services Tax (GST) committees in every market of the national capital to resolve tax-related problems being faced by traders.

Addressing the media, Sisodia said the decision to form the committees was taken at a Cabinet meeting earlier in the day. Each committee will comprise 12 to 15 traders.

The Deputy Chief Minister said that inputs from these committees would be taken before every GST Council meeting, which would help the government better understand traders’ problems and also frame policies accordingly.

“I’ve been meeting businessmen in small and big markets of Delhi and they still have a lot of GST-related confusion. They told me that the existing helpline numbers and centres are able to solve their doubts but not the problems they face,” he said.

Sisodia said that the work for formation of committees was already underway and that the same would be completed in about a fortnight.

He said that the GST committees were being made to have a two-way communication channel, and urged all Delhi traders to be a part of the committees and discuss their issues with an open mind.
