Bengaluru : Karnataka has created about 13.91 lakh jobs in the last four years and is close to achieving the state government’s target of generating 15 lakh jobs by 2019, state Large and Medium Industries Minister R.V. Deshpande said on Thursday.

“In the past four years, Karnataka has generated about 12.03 lakh jobs in the micro, small and medium enterprises sector and about 1.88 lakh jobs in the large industries sector. Another 5.79 lakh jobs are in the pipeline,” he said at the Vendor Development and Investors Summit 2017 being held here.

The state aims to create more jobs in “every possible” way, he added.

Terming Karnataka as one of the “fastest growing” states in India, Deshpande said: “People- centric transparent policies and hassle-free investment procedures are making the state as a global investment and manufacturing hub.”

The state is also working to become home to the world’s largest solar park, currently being constructed in Pavagada in Tumkur district. The 13,000-acres Pavagada Solar Park is expected to generate about 2,700 MW electricity by 2018.

“Karnataka has been the leader in providing conducive policy environment for the industries and in investing in technology and centres of excellence. We are the only state in the country to have a sector specific aerospace policy,” Deshpande, who also holds the Infrastructure Development portfolio, told investors and vendors at the summit’s inaugural event.

The entrepreneurs of Karnataka have an opportunity to create many jobs, said Biocon Ltd Chairman and Managing Director Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw.

“In times of jobless growth, the entrepreneurs of Karnataka have the opportunity to create a large number of jobs. We are the start-up capital of the country. We have been successful in creating new age jobs,” she said.

Leading Swedish home furnishings retailer IKEA, which is planning to set up its third store in the country in Bengaluru, after Hyderabad and Mumbai, is working to employ more workers and suppliers from the state, said IKEA India CEO Peter Betzel.

“The Bengaluru store will directly employ 800 people out of which 50 per cent will be women. We are keen to open three stores in the city in the near future.

“We have had close to 50 suppliers for over 40 years in Karnataka, with 45,000 people working in the supply chain. We are looking to source more from India, especially Karnataka,” he added.

T. Suvarna Raju, Managing Director of state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, said that the city-based aerospace and defence company plans to make 1,000 helicopters in the next decade.

“We have the highest expectation from vendors for the large volumes of aircraft to be produced. In a milestone, a BrahMos supersonic cruise missile was fired successfully (from a fighter aircraft) on Wednesday. Many partners from Bengaluru have made many parts of this 2,500 kg missile,” he said.

The two-day summit which began on Thursday is expected to witness the participation of over 2,000 industry leaders, over 600 MSMEs in sectors such as agriculture and food processing, innovation and manufacturing start-ups, aerospace and defence equipment among others.

The event will also host seminars on growth opportunities and trends in the industry sectors.

Karnataka shutdown on Friday over Cauvery water release

Bengaluru:(IANS) A daylong shutdown on Friday to protest release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu has disrupted normal life across Karnataka.

With buses, taxis and autos staying off roads, movement of people and goods halted in many cities and towns in the southern state, officials said.

Though the shutdown has not affected train and flight operations, hundreds of passengers alighting at railway stations and airports at Bengaluru and Mangaluru in the early hours were stranded in the absence of public or private transport.

Many passengers who had to board trains or flights during the day rushed to railway stations and airports in the early hours before the 12-hour shutdown began at 6 a.m.

State-run Bengaluru metro rail corporation, which operates on the east-west corridor, also suspended service but may resume late evening if normalcy prevails.

The state government declared holiday for all schools and colleges across the state to avoid inconvenience to students and teachers in the absence of transport.

Hundreds of IT companies, including Infosys, Wipro and multinationals in Bengaluru and Mysuru declared holiday for their employees, responding to the shutdown call by the Karnataka Okkuta, a federation of 500 pro-Kannada and other organisations.

Similarly, factories, private offices, markets, shops, malls, hotels, eateries, pubs, bars, theatres and petrol bunks have remained closed in support of the shutdown.

“The day-long state-wide shutdown is in protest against the Supreme Court order and to express resentment over the state government releasing the Cauvery water when we don’t have it for drinking and irrigation,” said Okkuta president Vatal Nagaraj here.

Bowing to the apex court’s Monday order, the state began releasing daily 15,000 cusecs since early Wednesday from Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) and Kabini reservoirs across the river basin for 10 days amid protests and demonstrations by farmers, traders and youth in the Mysuru region.

Admitting that frequent shutdowns cause inconvenience to the public, Nagaraj said there was no alternative to protest against injustice and failure of the state government in protecting the interests of the people, especially farmers.

The federation, however, exempted supply of essentials, including milk and medicines, from the shutdown. Ambulances will also be allowed to ferry patients to hospitals.

Deploying additional police personnel, the state government has tightened security, stepped up vigil and intensified patrolling to maintain peace and law and order.

Heavy rain hits coffee output in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu

Heavy rain hits coffee output in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu

Coffee TreeBengaluru:(IANS) Torrential rains due to a cyclonic storm and deep depression in the Bay of Bengal in the last 10 days have damaged coffee plantations in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, an official said on Tuesday.

Excessive rains have affected production by 20 percent, as coffee plantations in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu suffered damage when they were ready for harvesting,” Karnataka Planters’ Association chairman K. Kurian told reporters here.

Though the northeast monsoon is normal around this time in Tamil Nadu, the deep depression led to downpour in southern Karnataka across the Western Ghats where coffee is grown in shade on undulating hills and slopes of the terrain.

In neighbouring Tamil Nadu, coffee is grown largely in Yercaud.

“Incessant rains and strong surface winds have led to dropping and splitting of ripe coffee berries from plantations in our estates across the state even before we could harvest them. Due to slush and water logging, average picking has also reduced across plantations and wet conditions will delay drying them,” Kurian said.

Karnataka accounts for about 70 percent of the coffee production in the country followed by Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

“Though the Coffee Board has projected 3,55,600 tonnes in its post-blossom estimation for this fiscal (2015-16), comprising 2,45,300 tonnes of Robusta and 1,10,300 Arabica varieties, we are unlikely to achieve the target,” Kurian noted.

As is their wont, plantations were also affected due to delay in blossom rains early this year and unseasonal rains in April, followed by prolonged dry spell from June to September, as the southwest monsoon was 25-30 percent deficit this year.

“The board’s production estimate for Robusta is also high, as this coffee year (2015-16) is an aoff year’ for its beans. Similarly, Arabica output will be less as plantations have not yet come out of high white-stem borer disease and lot of its stems were uprooted to contain the damage,” he said.

The country’s coffee production in last fiscal (2014-15) was 3,27,000 tonnes, comprising 1,58,475 tonnes of Robusta and 98,000 tonnes of Arabica, while Karnataka accounted for 2,33,230 tonnes, with 1,72,830 tonnes of Robusta and 83,670 tonnes of Arabica.

The KPA is holding its 57th annual conference here over the next two days along with the United Planters’ Association of South India (Upasi) to deliberate on various issues pertaining to the commodity plantation sector spanning coffee, tea, rubber and spices, including pepper and cardamom.
