The Coronavirus has taken a heavy toll of the already bleak unemployment scenario of India. According to the Center for Monitoring of Indian Economy (CMIE), between April and July, one crore eighty nine lakhs employed people lost their job amidst restrictions imposed to curb the spread of pandemic.
Across sectors, employed people suffered salary cuts, while hundred of thousands of people were sent on leave without pay.
The CMIE report said that small businessmen, hawkers and daily labourers were severely hit particularly in April, as the national wide lock down was imposed in late March. Among the total 12 Crore 15 lakhs people who lost their job in April, 9 crore 12 lakhs people consist of these groups. Thus, the small businessmen, hawkers and daily labourers together consist of 75% of total job losses in the month, while they make up barely 32% of total jobs.
Ramping up his attack over rising unemployment Rahul Gandhi took on the NDA government over job losses since the outbreak of Coronavirus. Citing the CMIE report he tweeted in Hindi, “In last four months almost two crore people lost their jobs. Families of two crore people slipped into darkness. Spreading false news and hatred on Facebook cannot hide the unemployment and destruction of the economy.”
Earlier, On the occasion of 60th foundation day of Indian Youth Congress, Rahul Gandhi had launched the ‘Rozgar Do’ campaign. In a video message posted on twitter on the occasion He had said, “When Narendra Modi became Prime Minister, he promised the youth of this country that he would give employment to two crore people every year. He sold a dream, but the truth is 14 crore people have been made jobless by his policies.”

Brussels : A total 4.2 billion euros and 50,000 jobs will “go up in smoke” if Italy’s populist government pulls a planned high-speed rail link to France, European Parliament president Antonio Tajani said on Friday.
“The villainous pact on which the Conte government is based is now apparent,” Tajani said.
He was referring to the populist coalition between the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement and the far-right League party, lead by premier Giuseppe Conte.
“It (the government) is clinging onto power at all costs, at the expense of workers, companies, public health and the environment,” Tajani went on.
If construction of the stalled Turin-Lyon train link through the Alps were to be permanently abandoned, 4.2 billion euros and 50,000 jobs will “go up in smoke”, Tajani said.
Italy’s far-right deputy premier Matteo Salvini is in favour of completing the 8.6 billion euro high-speed rail link, known as the TAV, which the bloc is co-financing, but the project has split the populist government.
While Salvini and his League party wants the TAV to be built, its coalition partner the grassroots 5-Star Movement’s leader Luigi Di Maio and transport minister Danilo Toninelli have long opposed it on cost and environmental grounds.
On Thursday the Italian parliament passed a motion committing the government to “totally rediscuss” the TAV project, a move seen as an attempt to delay any definitive decision until after European parliamentary elections in May.
The project has been delayed for months due to 5-Star’s opposition to it. France and the EU – which is paying for 40 percent of the tunnel — could seek damages from Italy if the project is binned.

Company officials from three R&D centres located in Bengaluru, Delhi and Noida, will visit the IITs at Delhi, Kanpur, Mumbai, Chennai, Kharagpur, Guwahati, Varanasi and Roorkie starting December 1.
The R&D centres will also hire engineers from the newer IITs at Hyderabad, Dhanbad, Ropar, Indore, Gandhinagar, Patna, Bhubaneswar, Mandi and Jodhpur.
“Our R&D centres are focusing on cutting edge technologies, developing innovations for the Indian market as well as for the globe. We will continue to add engineers for research and development in these areas and further our commitment to making a strong research base in India,” said Sameer Wadhawan, Head, Human Resources, Samsung India.
Samsung has offered over 200 Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs) to students at the IITs this year.
“There’s a tactical shift that we have made to spot talent early and offer PPOs. This year, we had a slightly longer internship period so that students can spend more time in the company, giving them opportunity to interact with the leaders and managers.
“This helps us select bright talents amongst them,” said Wadhawan.
Apart from the IITs, Samsung will also be hiring from other top engineering colleges such as BITS Pilani, IIITs, NITs, Delhi Technological University, Manipal Institute of Technology and IISc Bangalore.
Between the IITs and other engineering colleges, Samsung will hire close to 1,000 engineers. In all it has offered 350 PPOs this year.

Bengaluru : Driven by demand for a skilled workforce in emerging technologies such as cyber security, Internet of things (IoT) and Big Data, India will generate over 14 lakh new IT jobs by 2027, a Cisco-led study said on Thursday.
This represents a whopping 46 per cent growth in jobs primarily driven by essential digital transformation skills that organisations are seeking today, said the global networking giant Cisco who commissioned International Data Corporation (IDC) to conduct this study.
According to the findings, jobs like social media administrator, Machine Learning (ML) designer and IoT designer are among the most in-demand job roles in the country in the coming years.
“Nearly 89 per cent of hiring managers reported a higher level of trust on candidates having certifications, while 88 per cent of customers experienced an improvement in the level of service and support to end users,” showed the study.
“Witnessing the growing importance in a rapidly changing technological landscape, nearly a fifth of employees self-funded their certification courses while about 50 per cent of them underwent some training in 2017,” it added.
According to the study, as skill sets required in this digital age change for most industries, it’s also transforming how and where people work.
As a result, IT organisations might find it difficult to fill these niche roles which calls for upskilling the employee skill sets through certification programmes.
“Cisco, being a leader in certification courses, offers some of the most sought-after IT courses which were one of the pre-requisites for the 5.9 million new job postings in 2017,” according to the IDC “InfoBrief” study.
A Nasscom report in July highlighted the fact that nearly 1.4 lakh jobs are vacant in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data Analytics segment across various sectors in the country, out of the total demand of 5.1 lakh employees.
Of the total demand, 3.7 lakh jobs are filled, it said. By 2021, the employee deficit would increase to 2.3 lakh, as the total demand goes up to around 8 lakh employees, as per the report.
