Jamia Engineering Students Stand Out in Robotics Competition

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has added one more feather in its cap. Close on the heels of MHRD’s pat on its back, the university’s engineering students have excelled in a prestigious robotics competition    

NEW DELHI — A team of four students of Faculty of Engineering, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) secured first position in the theme ‘Construct-O-Bot’ of eYantra-2019 Robotics Competition (eYRC-2019) hosted by IIT Bombay.

Hundreds of teams from various engineering colleges of the country competed with each other for six different themes in the competition, said PRO Ahmad Azeem in a statement.

Team number 2541 consisting aof JMI Computer Science Engineering- II year students Ifa Zareen, Shahrukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan and Abhishek Shukla of Electrical Engineering-II year bagged the first position in the theme ‘Construct-O-Bot.’

The team was given a problem statement in which it had to construct a robot which can help in reconstruction of collapsed buildings during disaster.

In eYRC-2019, 28 teams from the Faculty of Engineering & Technology, JMI participated in the competition, out of which 25 teams qualified for Stage Include, and 10 from them progressed to Stage II.

According to the university, the competition is divided into three stages: to qualify for Stage I, teams have to appear for an online aptitude test. Stage I is mostly about simulation of the robot, to familiarize students with the idea of robot mechanics.

After qualifying for Stage I, the hardware is shipped to the teams for Stage II progress. The stages have certain learning-based tasks which eventually lead to the final problem statement to be implemented. Teams successfully solving the problem are selected for finals.

Dr. Tanvir Ahmad (HOD, Computer Engineering Department), has given consistent support to students and they were able to successfully complete their journey and eventually win the competition.

e-Yantra is a project sponsored by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) through the National Mission on Education through ICT to spread effective embedded systems and robotics education at engineering/science/polytechnic colleges across the country.

Earlier this week, the JMI’s performance was rated as ‘Outstanding’ in an evaluation done by the MHRD and consistently improving its rank in the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.
