ISESCO hosts Forum for Industrial Information and Statistics in Arab CountriesRabat : The Forum for Industrial Information and Statistics in the Arab Countries (FIISAC), with the theme of “Massive Data Technologies”, kicked off at the headquarters of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) in Rabat, Morocco, on Wednesday.

The agenda of the three-day forum, being organized by the ISESCO in collaboration with the Arab Industrial Development and Mining Organization (AIDMO), features topics like use of artificial intelligence and its impacts on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), big data and artificial intelligence, Arab and global challenges facing artificial intelligence, and presentation of the leading artificial intelligence experiments.

Participants in the forum include scientists, researchers, experts and university professors from Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Tunisia, as well as representatives of Moroccan public sectors, specialized regional organizations and experts from the ISESCO and AIDMO.

The event is held as part of the two organizations’ keenness to develop science, technology and industrial development in member states and to keep abreast of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), especially in the field of artificial intelligence and the great development in information and statistics, and the urgent need for exchange of experiences to contribute to achieving the 2030 Agenda for SDGs.

Brussels to host first Islamic-European Forum on cooperation to curb hate speech in media

Brussels to host first Islamic-European Forum on cooperation to curb hate speech in mediaRabat : The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), in coordination with the Islamic Development and Research Academy (IDARA), will hold the Islamic-European Forum for Examining Cooperation Ways to Curb Hate Speech in the Media, in Brussels, Belgium, on June 29-30.

The forum, to be held at the Press Club Brussels Europe, aims to publicize the contents of the OIC Media Strategy to Counter Islamophobia and ISESCO’s Program for Training Media Professionals on Redressing Stereotypes about Islam and Muslims; diagnose the role of the media in propagating hate speech and Islamophobia; support cooperation and coordination among media professionals to promote human rights culture and distinguish between the freedom of expression and defamation of religions, reject racism and hate, and cater for coexistence needs; and explore ways to develop cooperation mechanisms among Muslim media professionals and their fellows from Western countries within the framework of the professional ethics and respect for international laws on media and communication.

The forum’s agenda features four main themes: stereotypes about the other in the media between the freedom of expression and respect for human rights; requirements for promoting communication and cooperation among media professionals; addressing reciprocal stereotypes; countering Islamophobia, and providing the conditions suitable for coexistence. In addition, a workshop will be held during the forum to assess and adopt the final version of the “Guidebook for Training Media Professionals to Cover Terrorist Acts”, prepared by the OIC General Secretariat.

The conference will come to close with the adoption of the “Draft Brussels Declaration on Curbing Hate Speech in the Media” and the “Draft Declaration of the Creation of the International League of Media Professionals to Curb Hate and Extremism”.

Participants in the event will include various media professionals from the OIC member states, European countries, experts in international law, press law and human rights, representatives of NGOs interested in the issues of dialogue, security and interfaith coexistence, as well as the director of the OIC Standing Committee for Information and Cultural Affairs (COMIAC).

The opening ceremony will be attended by the representatives of many diplomatic missions of Arab and Islamic countries accredited to Belgium, representative of the OIC Mission in Brussels, along with representatives of the Belgian ministries of justice and interior, the European Commission and the European Parliament.

The forum is organized as part of cooperation and coordination between ISESCO and the OIC General Secretariat to meet the challenges arising from the mounting Islamophobia and promote communication and cooperation between media professionals in the Islamic world and beyond. It also comes in implementation of the relevant resolutions of the Islamic conferences of information and culture ministers.

ISESCO to hold expert meeting on ‘Marketing and Entrepreneurship Education’

ISESCORabat : The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) will hold an expert meeting at its headquarters in Rabat on March 28-29 to discuss joint cooperation among member countries in marketing and entrepreneurship education.

The meeting will bring together experts from Brunei Darussalam, Iran, Jordan, Qatar, Malaysia, Morocco, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, as well as from the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World (FUIW) and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

Participants will discuss the guidelines and curriculum for the project of establishing joint cooperation among OIC member states in the fields of marketing and entrepreneurship education, which include designing a marketing mechanism and developing a strategic plan for joint cooperation in marketing and entrepreneurship education.

The meeting report will be submitted to the next meeting of the Consultative Council for the Implementation of the Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation in Islamic Countries, for its presentation and adoption at the 9th session of the Advisory Council for Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation in the Islamic World, to be held during 2019.

Conference on Protecting Cultural Heritage of Muslim World kicks off in Istanbul

Conference on Protecting Cultural Heritage of Muslim World kicks off in IstanbulIstanbul : The activities of the International Conference on Protecting Cultural Heritage of the Muslim World kicked off Wednesday in the Turkish city of Istanbul.

The two-day event is being held under the sponsorship of the Istanbul-based OIC Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA) and the Rabat-based Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO).

“Cultural heritage is one of the most important human values,” said Turkish Education Minister Ismet Yilmaz in a speech at the opening ceremony of the conference.

“The transfer of this legacy to future generations is an indispensable guide and condition to prove humanity’s progress,” he added, pointing out that Istanbul is one of the most important global cultural centers.

Yilmaz called on the Islamic world to make further efforts to preserve the cultural heritage and protect it from the ongoing wars in a number of countries in the region.

ISESCO to hold training workshop in Uganda on cottage industry

UgandaRabat : The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) will organize a national training workshop on cottage industry for rural women in Kampala, Uganda, on 25-27 September, as part of Kampala’s celebration as the African Region’s Islamic Culture Capital for 2017.

The workshop aims at increasing rural women’s chances in finding an income-generating work to contribute to social development, enhancing economic capacities, fighting poverty and empowering rural women.

The workshop will benefit 40 women from various rural regions of Uganda. Dr Aicha Bammoun, Program Specialist at the Directorate of Science and Technology, will supervise the workshop on behalf of ISESCO.
