Facebook launches Canvas to bring life into mobile ads

faceook canvasNew York : (IANS) The social media giant Facebook on Friday launched Canvas — a new full-screen, immersive mobile ad experience that loads nearly instantaneously when someone taps on a news feed ad — for advertisers across the world.

The new feature allows advertisers to use a mix of video, still images, text and call-to-action buttons to build beautiful and effective brand and product experiences on mobile, the company announced in a blog post on Friday.

“We made the creative community a priority when we designed and built Canvas. It’s a product that represents our commitment to creative craft and delivering the best mobile experience for businesses and people,” said Chris Jones, head of creative technology, Facebook Creative Shop.

Canvas uses the same technology that makes photos and videos load quickly on Facebook, so it loads as much as 10 times faster than the standard mobile web.

“We’re committed to building great mobile experiences for people and doing so also opens up new creative possibilities for advertisers. We’ve invested in engaging experiences like video and the carousel format to empower advertisers with more creative space to share their brand and products on mobile,” read the blog post.

Any advertiser can start building a Canvas as it is easy to build with no code or software required.

Canvas is designed with input from the creative community at every step and is designed to help businesses tell stories and show products on mobile devices in a beautiful way.

“It helps advertisers achieve any objective by giving businesses a fully customizable digital space on which to build multimedia stories,” the post added.

The feature works on both Android and iOS platforms.

Within a Canvas, people enjoy moving through digital stories easily.

They can swipe through a carousel of images, tilt to view panoramic images and zoom in to view images in detail, making the Canvas experience immersive and engaging.

FacebookNew York:(IANS) Although young shoppers are increasingly buying smartphones online, they believe brands can further improve this by providing a seamless experience across a variety of channels on the path to purchase, a new Facebook study has revealed.

Shoppers are increasingly turning to mobiles for research, comparing prices and even making their final purchase.

“Indeed, 45 percent of all shopping journeys today contain mobile. And for Millennials, this number jumps to 57 percent. Almost half of Millennials expect to buy more on their smartphone in the year ahead,” said Facebook IQ which commissioned market research firm GfK to conduct the study involving more than 2,400 “omni-channel shoppers.”

“Omni-channel shoppers” consider the internet to be an important source of inspiration when it comes to discovering new products and browsing a wider range of brands including smartphones and tablets.

“While 56 percent say they have made a purchase on a mobile device because they were already using it, 55 percent say they use mobile because they can do it anywhere, anytime,” the findings showed.

Meanwhile, 60 percent of “omni-channel shoppers” say they will either start purchasing or purchase more on their smartphones in 2016 and 64 percent anticipate doing more shopping research on their smartphones.

“There is an opportunity for brands to ease the browsing and buying experience and rekindle the magic of being in-store – on mobile,” the study noted.

Some “omni-channel shoppers” cite finding it easier to use larger screens as a reason they prefer buying on desktop or laptop over buying on mobile.

Some prefer to shop at a physical store because they enjoy the overall experience and like to be able to touch items they are considering purchasing.

“While some say they don’t want to wait for shipping or pay for the shipping costs often associated with buying things online,” the researchers added.

Seventy percent of mobile shoppers say the website/app experience can be improved and 71 percent feel the transaction experience can be improved.

“Brands that want to reach these consumers will focus on eliminating the barriers that stop people from buying on mobile, like by making it easy to enter payment information, offering multiple shipping options and allowing consumers to complete a transaction without downloading an app,” the findings showed.

San Jose (California):(IANS) After his townhall style question-answer session at Facebook, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday visited the Google headquarters for an interaction with CEO Sundar Pichai, and Google co-founders Larry Page and Eric Schmidt.

“It’s a visit to Google Guru, as the PM likes to call it, after the Facebook Q&A,” tweeted PMO India.

“A is for Alphabet. PM @narendramodi at @Google headquarters, with Larry  Page @sundarpichai and @ericschmidt,” tweeted external affairs ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup.

Received by Pichai with a handshake, Modi was given a tour of the Googleplex in Mountain View, Santa Clara, and their four critical projects and their value for Digital India.

“From ground level to global. @sundarpichai explains navigational, safety and other uses of Street View & Google Earth,” Swarup said.

Modi asked if Khagaul could be pinpointed on Google Earth. Khagaul near Patna is where the great Indian astronomer Aryabhatta had an observatory.

Modi was also shown a zoom-in picture of the Ganga river in Varanasi via Google Earth.

“A clear view of health. PM @narendramodi gets a view of Project Iris, smart lens that measure glucose levels,” Swarup tweeted.

At Googleplex, Modi also witnessed the start of a 15-hour hackathon or a marathon software coding session with some 150 Indian programmers looking to produce software and applications relevant to India for Modi’s Digital India and Skill India missions.

Hosted by the Indian IT industry trade body, the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM), along with a clutch of start-ups in India and the US, the hackathon is having a simultaneous session at Tech Mahindra’s Noida facility.

Later on Sunday night, Modi, who last year got a rockstar like reception at New York’s Madison Square Garden, would be hoping to recreate that magic at a community reception in San Jose.

More than 45,000 people have registered for free passes for the event at the 19,000-seat SAP Centre organised by an Indian American group.

Facebook records one billion logins in a day

FacebookSan Francisco:(IANS/EFE) A billion users logged into social networking site Facebook on August 24 for the first time, founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said.

“We just passed an important milestone. For the first time ever, one billion people used Facebook in a single day,” he wrote on his Facebook page late Thursday.

“On Monday, one in seven people on the Earth used Facebook to connect with their friends and family.”

The founder of the world’s largest social network said the achievement was a step towards the company’s objective to connect everyone to the internet.

“Our community stands for giving every person a voice, for promoting understanding and for including everyone in the opportunities of our modern world,” Zuckerberg wrote.

He said he believed “a more open and connected world is a better world.”

“It brings stronger relationships with those you love, a stronger economy with more opportunities, and a stronger society that reflects all of our values.”

Facebook has a total of 1.5 billion users who connect at least once a month. The social network reached the one billion mark in October 2012.

How Facebook decides what’s trending

FacebookNew York:(IANS) Ever wondered how Facebook determines what you see in your news feed every time you log in? The social networking site has actually devised different algorithms for it.

Apart from things like where you live and the pages you follow, it primarily looks for two broader signals — Topics that are being mentioned a lot and topics that suddenly seen an increase in mentions, Re/Code reported.

For example, singer Justin Bieber is mentioned often on Facebook. So the total volume of mentions is always high and is not a good indicator of whether or not he is part of a trending topic.

So, Facebook would look for a hike in mentions relative to the normal prattle around Bieber.

“This means that things that trend are not just the most highly mentioned people or topics, they have to be tied to some kind of relevant event,” the report said.

Once a topic is identified as trending, it is approved by a human controller, who also writes a short description for the story.

These people don’t get to pick what Facebook adds to the trending section.

“That’s done automatically by the algorithm. They just get to pick the headline,” the report added.
