Beijing, China : Nepal’s Foreign Minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara yesterday called for more Chinese investments in the Himalayan nation, saying Kathmandu is focused on increasing connectivity with Beijing.
Inaugurating the newly-established office of the Consulate General of Nepal at the port city of Guangzhou in China, Mahara, who is also the deputy prime minister, said: “there are good opportunities for investments in inter-country railways, roads and transmission lines”.
“Nepal is focusing on investment in infrastructure development and inter-country economic sector in order to increase connectivity between both the countries,” the visiting Nepalese leader said.
He also expressed belief that the office will contribute in strengthening bilateral ties and broaden relations in the economic sector, Nepal’s foreign ministry said.
Mahara said that economic and trade activities will surge with the establishment of the consulate.
He also added that the relations between people of the two countries will enhance further in the coming days.
Foreign Minister Mahara is on a six-day visit to China for talks with senior Chinese leaders on the invitation of his counterpart Wang Yi.
Nepal in May inked a deal with China to join Chinese President Xi Jinping’s ambitious ‘One Belt One Road’ (OBOR) initiative to link Asia with Europe.
The newly-established consulate is Nepal’s fourth such office in China.
There are 200 Nepalese businessmen engaged in various businesses in Guangzhou.

Xiamen (China) : China on Monday announced 500 million yuan (about $76 million) for economic and technological cooperation and exchanges among BRICS countries.
Beijing also said it will allocate $4 million to the New Development Bank (NDB).
“I wish to announce here that China will launch the economic and technical cooperation plan for BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) countries with 500 million yuan for the first term to facilitate policy exchange and practical cooperation and in the economic and trade field,” Chinese President Xi Jinping said at the opening ceremony of the bloc’s 9th summit here.
“China will contribute $4 million to the NDB project preparation facility to support the business operation on a long term development of the bank,” he added.

Beijing : China and Russia are set to sign a milestone agreement on joint space exploration from 2018 to 2022, the media reported on Monday.
The deal is expected to be signed in October and will bring significant benefits to both nations, particularly in manned and future missions to the moon, the People’s Daily reported.
The bilateral agreement will cover five areas including lunar and deep space exploration, developing special materials, collaboration in the area of satellite systems, Earth remote sensing, and space debris research, according to informed sources.
This is not the first space agreement between China and Russia, but it is the first to cover a partnership spanning five years.
China also plans to launch a mission to collect samples from the moon to the Earth, and in 2018 Beijing is expected to launch the first module of its own space station, scheduled to be completed in 2022, reports Efe news.
In 2020, China plans to send a mission to Mars with a robot vehicle for scientific research, and last year inaugurated the world’s largest radio telescope, half a kilometre in diameter.

Jeddah : Saudi Arabia and China plan to establish and operate jointly a $20 billion investment fund, sharing costs and profits on a 50:50 basis, Energy Minister Khalid Al-Falih said on Thursday.
Al-Falih was speaking on the sidelines of an economic conference of senior officials and businessmen from the two countries. It was attended by Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli. Al-Falih said a company will be established between the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, Aramco and a Chinese company in order to attract Chinese industrial investments. This, he said, is in favor of both the Saudi Vision 2030 and the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative. China has announced plans to establish such joint investment funds around the world in recent years as a way to cement bilateral economic ties. In December 2015, Beijing said it would establish a $10 billion fund with the United Arab Emirates, and last October a plan for a fund with France was revealed.
Meanwhile, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman received Gaoli at Al-Salam Palace in Jeddah on Thursday. The Chinese leader conveyed the greetings of President Xi Jinping to the King, who also sent his greetings to the Chinese president. King Salman commended the level of relations between the two friendly countries and the important role of the high-level Saudi-Chinese Joint Committee in developing and enhancing bilateral cooperation between the Kingdom and China. Beijing : China on Wednesday said it hoped the upcoming BRICS summit will be a success with the concerted efforts of all parties.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry said this when it was asked whether or not Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the three-day summit in Xiamen in the backdrop of the Doklam border row between India and China.
“China is confident that with the concerted efforts of all parties, the Summit will achieve success and scale a new high level for BRICS relations,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said.
“Preparation for BRICS Summit in Xiamen is underway. Preparation has proceeded in an orderly faction and has reached an advanced stage,” Hua added.
“You also mentioned illegal trespass of Indian border troops. Our stand has been very clear.
“Unconditional withdrawal of all trespassing personnel and equipment serves as the prerequisite and the basis for settlement of this incident.”
The BRICS Summit will be held in Xiamen from September 3 to 5.
