Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust gives India its first Transit Shopping Complex

  • Mufaddal Shopping Arcade will temporarily house businesses which are currently a part of the 16.5 acres Bhendi Bazaar redevelopment project
  • The mammoth task of constructing 200 shops has been completed in a record time of 90 days from start to finish
  • Mufaddal Shopping Arcade will serve as a model for change from an unorganized chaotic market place into a well-planned modern shopping destination

Mumbai : The Bhendi Bazaar redevelopment project undertaken by Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust (SBUT), announced the inauguration of India’s first and only transit shopping complex – Mufaddal Shopping Arcade. “The name of the arcade is derived from Syedna Mohammmed Burhanuddin’s heir apparent Syedi Mufaddal Bhaisaheb Saifuddin said Qureish Raghib, media associate of SBUT.” This well- planned shopping plaza is designed to temporarily house 200 of those businesses which are currently a part of the 16.5 acres redevelopment project he informed.

The inauguration of this commercial transit is part of the celebrations of the Golden Jubilee of Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin’s accession to the office Dai al-Multaq.

Mufaddal Shopping Arcade, located 500 meters (0.5km) from the existing project site will serve as a model for change from an unorganized chaotic market place into a well-planned modern shopping destination. The shopping complex is designed keeping the flavor and spirit of the lively Bhendi Bazaar intact. Commercial viability, provision of street shopping and safe business environment for a diverse mix of businesses will ensure prosperity to the existing businesses/retailers.

Speaking at the inauguration, Secretary of the Trust, Shaikh Abdeali bhai Bhanpurawala said, “Mufaddal Shopping Arcade — a commercial transit — is a model that offers a preview into the actual mission of our Upliftment project. Eventually, we wish to change the outlook of the Bhendi Bazaar area and uplift the lifestyle of the existing occupants who are a part of the 16.5 acre project.

On behalf of SBUT, I thank the Municipality and Government authorities for proving all assistance and facilities to make this project a success”, he added.

The tool to measure the success of any urban renewal or cluster development project is the various facilities provided during the construction process. Keeping the people’s livelihood at the core, SBUT has built this transit shopping complex for commercial tenants with an array of amenities to facilitate growth in business.

The amenities provided in this transit complex include:

  • Entrance – 3 wide entrances to facilitate pedestrian movement
  • Escalator – to facilitate upward movement of the customers
  • Lifts – 2 customer lifts and 1 service lift
  • State-of-the-art interiors with a striking external façade
  • Well-designed pavements with elegant public area lighting and landscaping
  • Granite common area flooring with stainless steel and glass railing around aisles
  • Wide, open-to-sky pedestrian streets
  • Washrooms on every floor
  • Prayer room  accession

The complex is an integral part of the ambitious Bhendi Bazaar cluster redevelopment project which is set to enhance the lives of over 20,000 people and impact 3200 homes and 1250 businesses he added.

About Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust (SBUT)

Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust, a public charitable trust is formed to redevelop one of India’s most populated area, Bhendi Bazaar in South Mumbai. This Upliftment project envisioned by Dr.Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin (TUS), head of the Dawoodi Bohra community, is one of Asia’s largest Upliftment and Urban Renewal project.

Bhendi Bazaar, a 150-year old development, that was once considered one of Bombay’s best shopping destination, is now in a dilapidated state. This path-breaking project will create a well-planned residential locality with modern buildings, wide roads, better infrastructure, open spaces and a contemporary commercial space.

This redevelopment project initiated under Development Control Regulation (DCR) No. 33(9) will transform Bhendi Bazaar into a diverse sustainable community with a healthy neighbourhood creating a vibrant modern urban area which will provide an example and impetus for other urban renewal projects in Mumbai, in India, and throughout the world.

The project spreads across 16.5 acres of landmass comprising of 3200 homes in 250 existing buildings and 1250 businesses, all of which put together will touch lives of 20,000 people.

To ease the inconvenience caused to the tenants, the trust has arranged for a fully furnished residential transit facilities and a commercial transit facility (Mufaddal Shopping Arcade), within 3 km radius from the project site.
