Muslim Girl in Hijab Takes on Hindu Mob Singlehandedly, Shouts ‘Allah-o-Akbar’

Unperturbed by the sudden ambush of male students after she arrived at her college, the girl stood ground and gave a spirited verbal fight.

NEW DELHI – A Muslim student, clad in an abaya (a loose-fitting long-sleeved middle-eastern robe worn by Muslim women) with a hijab on, took on a group of Hindu students. The moment the girl arrived at her college in Mandya district of Karnataka on Tuesday, the mob sporting saffron scarves started heckling her. Unperturbed by the sudden ambush, the girl stood ground and gave them a spirited verbal fight.

Video of the episode took the internet by storm with many hailing the courage the girl displayed in an adverse situation. She was alone standing up to the all-male student group constantly heckling her with religious slogans. She was not perturbed wee bit, but stood ground matching their “Jai Shri Ram” chants with her “Allah u Akbar” keeping her cool.

The incident took place at PES College Mandya when the men confronted her and tried to heckle her while she was walking towards her classroom after parking her bike. She has been identified as Muskaan

Heckling of the girl took place in the wake of a massive controversy in the state over ban on entry of Muslim girl students in several colleges across the state. The colleges are denying entry to Muslim girl students as Hindu students, with the backing of some Hindutva groups, started wearing saffron coloured shawls and turban as a counter to the Muslim women wearing hijab.Speaking to a TV channel, Muskaan said she was going to submit her assignments when she was waylaid by the male students determined not to let her inside the college “because I was wearing burqa”.

“I will continue to wear hijab. It is part of being a Muslim girl,” she asserted. “We will continue protests.”

She also said she was protected by the principal and college staff as the irate group of students kept heckling her.

Praveen Madhukar Pawar, police inspector general, was quoted by prominent English daily saying the incident is part of the larger row around hijab. He, however, denied any tension in the area.
