Kerala: Thousands take to streets for Muslim League’s Waqf protection rally

by | Dec 10, 2021

Thousands of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML)’s cadres joined a massive protest rally on Kozhikode beach on Thursday against the decision of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government to hand over Waqf Board appointments to the Kerala Public Service Commission (PSC).

“We will not bow out from our protest until the PSC (Additional Functions as Respects the Services Under the Waqf Board ) Act 2021 was repealed,” tall Muslim League politicians said in their speeches.

Muslim groups in the left-governing state have been protesting the act which was passed in Assembly a month ago.

Inaugurating the rally, Muslim League‘s high-power committee member Panakkad Syed Sadiqali Shihab Thangal said his party would continue its struggle against the Pinarayi Vijayan government if it tried to trample upon the rights of the Muslim community enshrined in the Constitution.

Muslim League national general secretary P.K. Kunhalikutty warned the left government that the rally was just a reminder to the government that Muslim League was not organising a protest for the first time and also not for the last time.

According to Kunhalikutty, the issue is not just leaving the Waqf Board appointments to the PSC, but about robbing the rights of the institution.

Former Muslim League MP and Tamil Nadu Waqf Board chairman M Abdul Rahman also joined the demonstration.

“Respected chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan should see this (massive rally), and he should realise the reality of the reflection what he has announced and enacted in the Assembly…” Rahman said.
