Lok Sabha MP from Dhubri constituency in Assam, Badruddin Ajmal has termed as politically motivated the media campaign in Assam which claims he is the worst performer in utilizing the MP fund. He said he has spent around Rs 16.5 crore of Member of Parliament Local Area Development fund in his constituency since 2009.
“When I have utilization certificates of every year issued by Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Dhubri which describes that an amount of around Rs 16.5 crore under MPLAD fund has been spent for developmental works in my constituency then how can anyone claim that I could not spend even 50% of MPLAD fund?” perfume baron and first time MP Ajmal said in a press statement.
Based on the data available on the official website of the MPLAD, several media in March had reported him as the worst performer in the state.
Even today (06 April 2014), the official website mplads.nic.in shows Ajmal having Rs 7.38 crore as unspent balance. The site says he has spent only Rs 9.33 crore, that is 56.55% utilization of the fund (Rs 19 crore) allocated to him.
When Ajmal’s Personal Assistant was asked to explain the contradiction that is clearly visible in his claim and the official data available on the website, he said: I have gone through that website while preparing this release and I noted the same, then I contacted the officials, they said they take time to update website. However, you know better that most of the govt. websites are not updated timely sometimes for months so that cannot be trusted.”
To prove his claim, Manzar Bilal, Ajmal’s PA has provided utilization certificates provided to the MP by Deputy Commissioner of Dhubri.
“I think the documents I have provided have been issued by Deputy Commissioner of Dhubri with seal and signature (and they) are more authentic,” he said.
Ajmal, who heads All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has filed nomination from Dhubri seat for the second term.
“I entered the politics with the goal to serve people and I have made efforts during last five years for the development of the state and my constituency which is known to all that is why people are extending their love and supports towards us. But our opponents are trying to spread baseless propaganda against us because they fear of soaring popularity of AIUDF,” Ajmal said.
