‘We are concerned over the plight of the farmers, and refusal of the Central government to respond to their genuine demands’
NEW DELHI – Up to 50 trade unions as well as organisations of women, students and human rights activists held a meeting at Shaheed Park, Delhi Gate, on Monday to show solidarity with the protesting farmers.
The meeting was held in response to the farmers’ call for nation-wide agitation against three controversial farm laws. On Monday, they observed a day-long fast throughout the country and raised slogans outside the offices of district commissioners.
The Delhi meeting was held under the banner of Delhi for Farmers.
The atmosphere was charged with heavy and passionate slogans against the unjust farm laws. Various cultural organisations, through songs and performances, instilled a passion for the peasant movements in the participants of the meeting.
While expressing support for the farmers’ movement, many Delhiites, including the representatives of Delhi’s citizens, professional associations, expressed their solidarity by issuing letters of support or through posts on social media.
“We are concerned over the plight of the farmers, and refusal of the Central government to respond to their genuine demands. The violence against the very people who grow food that we eat, is against the ethos and spirit of our constitution. The State is not only openly colluding with the capitalist class but the BJP leaders are also spreading misinformation through sections of the media about the farmer’s protest,” it was said at the meeting.
Until the three laws are repealed and the Electricity Bill 2020 is withdrawn, Delhi for Farmers will continue to work shoulder to shoulder with farmers,” it was said.
The organisations which participated in the meeting are: AICTTU, AIDSO, AIDWA, AIDYO, AIFTU (New), AILU, AIMSS, AISA, AITUC, AIUTUC, ANHAD, BSCEM, Collective, CITU, CSW, CTF, DASTAK, DSF, DSMM, DSU, DTF, DYFI, ICTU, IFTU, IFTU (Sarwahara), IMK, IMS, Jan Natya Manch, JNUSU, Khet Mazdoor Union, KYS, LPF, MEC, MEK, NFIW, Nishant Natya Manch, NTUI, SEWA, PDSU, Pinjra Tod, PMSF, Pragatisheel MS, Progami MS, Revolutionary Culture Forum, Saheli, SFI, TUCC, and TUCI.
