Valpoi, Goa: Farmers held a massive protest under the banner of Sattari Shetkari Manch (SSM) in Goa’s Valpoi town. They demanded inclusion of monkeys in the vermin category alleging that their crops are damaged by this animal.

They also demanded issuance of license to farmers to save their crops from monkeys.

“Unfortunately, monkeys frequently attack our trees, damage fruits, I alone suffered loss of four to five lakh last year. Loss of all taluka farmers will be in crores every year, if calculated, Uday Sawant, a farmer associated with SSM said while speaking to this correspondent.

According to him, a large number of farmers live in Sattari Taluka and majority of them depend on plantation of coconut, cashew, banana etc.

Farmer Manikarao Desai said that the state is facing an acute shortage of coconut and the prime reason is monkeys. “We are not against any animals but the government should take appropriate measures to stop raiding of crops,” Desai added.

SSM has given 15 days ultimatum to the government to meet their demands. They warned of intensifying their protest if their demands are fulfilled.

Sattari Taluka of this coastal state is 45 KM from the capital city Panjim. It is known for natural beauty and dense forests.
