Pawan Khera defends Hasina’s ‘prolonged’ stay

Pawan Khera defends Hasina’s ‘prolonged’ stay

New Delhi: Congress leader Pawan Khera on Wednesday defended former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s extended stay in the country amid calls from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for her extradition and said that “no one can interfere” with India’s foreign policy.

BNP Secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir had earlier criticised India for providing prolonged refuge to Hasina, citing several criminal charges against her in Bangladesh.

In response, Khera firmly stated, “India has its independent international policy, and the country does not tolerate it if someone interferes in it.”

Speaking to IANS, the Congress leader also addressed recent domestic issues, including the sentencing of culprits in the Ajmer rape case after 32 years and criticised the BJP-led government for its handling of crimes against women, particularly in cases involving minors, citing the recent Badlapur case as an example of government inaction.

PIL filed in HC demanding ED probe against RG Kar ex-principal Sandip Ghosh

PIL filed in HC demanding ED probe against RG Kar ex-principal Sandip Ghosh

Kolkata: A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed at the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday, demanding an Enforcement Directorate (ED) probe into the alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata when Sandip Ghosh was its principal.

The Division Bench of Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya admitted the petition filed by the former Deputy Medical Superintendent of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, Akhtar Ali.

The petition has become significant since the West Bengal government earlier this week announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team comprising senior Indian Police Service officers which would be headed by an officer of the rank of Inspector General, to prove the allegations of financial irregularities at the hospital under the command of Sandip Ghosh.

On Wednesday, Ali made another petition at the single-judge Bench of Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj seeking protection in anticipation of a security threat for coming out against Ghosh. Justice Bharadwaj admitted the petition.

Ali had claimed to media persons that he intimated the state Health Department two years ago about the financial irregularities at RG Kar hospital, however, his initiative failed to evoke any response from them at that point of time.

That is precisely why he had approached the Calcutta High Court with a plea for a probe by a central agency, he claimed.

WB BJP demands CM Mamata Banerjee’s resignation

Kolkata: The BJP West Bengal unit on Wednesday demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging that the law and order situation in the state has reached its nadir under her rule.

The state BJP unit is holding a five-day demonstration to protest the alleged rape and murder of a woman postgraduate trainee doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.

“The Chief Minister should resign as soon as possible,” state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar told reporters at the demonstration venue at Shyambazar, about half a kilometre away from R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday allowed the state BJP to stage the demonstration for five days to protest the alleged rape and murder of the woman postgraduate trainee doctor.

The state had prayed that the demonstration be allowed for only one day, claiming that a five-day sit-in would affect the convenience of the general public.

UP: Residents threaten mass exodus after minority family buys house

Hindus of Vakeelo Wali Gali, a residential area in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly’s Punjab Pura area have come out in protest against a Muslim family who recently purchased a house in their locality.

According to the protestors, the Muslim family was not welcomed and demanded an immediate annulment of the property’s registration. They even threatened a mass exodus of their demand was not met.

Former secretary of the bar association of Bareilly Arvind Srivastava said that the family hailed from Assam and was involved in the illegal possession of a local mosque.

Citing Prime Minister Modi and UP CM Yogi Adityanath’s past statements Srivastava told a local news channel that they will ‘neither allow Assamese nor Bangladeshis’ to step into their locality.

“Our Prime Minister and chief minister have said that Bangladeshis and Assamese shall not step forward. Who will be responsible for the ‘love jihad’ that this may lead to?” Srivastava asked.

AIIMS Delhi constitutes two committees to assess safety measures at campus

AIIMS Delhi constitutes two committees to assess safety measures at campus

New Delhi: The AIIMS Delhi administration on Wednesday appealed to striking resident doctors to resume duties in the interest of patient care, saying a collaborative internal security audit will be conducted to assess safety and security measures within the campus.

Two committees have also been constituted by the administration to look into safety issues at the institute and other concerns of the doctors.

Resident doctors of AIIMS have been on strike demanding a central legislation for the protection of healthcare workers following the alleged rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor at a state-run medical college and hospital in Kolkata.

Besides the security audit, the AIIMS administration has also decided to install Al-enabled CCTV cameras at key entry and exit points of the Mother and Child Block on a pilot basis.

Such cameras shall be able to recognise all visitors with facial recognition technology and shall help security staff to identify persons entering and exiting frequently thereby helping them in access control of unauthorised personnel.
