Road crashes biggest cause of deaths due to unintentional injuries: Report

Road crashes biggest cause of deaths due to unintentional injuries: Report

New Delhi: Road crashes are the biggest cause of deaths due to unintentional injuries in India, accounting for more than 43 per cent of such fatalities, with overspeeding being the leading reason, according to a new report.

The other contributors to deaths due to unintentional injuries are drowning, falls, poisoning and burns.

The report titled “National Strategy for prevention of unintentional injury”, compiled by the Ministry of Health, was launched during “Safety 2024”, the 15th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion, 2024.

“There were 4,30,504 deaths from unintentional injuries and 1,70,924 deaths due to intentional injuries in India in 2022. From 2016 to 2022, there has been a marginal increase in deaths due to unintentional and intentional injuries. Road Traffic Crashes (RTCs) are the highest cause of unintentional injuries (43.7 per cent),” the report said.

While drowning accounts for 7.3 to 9.1 per cent of such fatalities, falls contribute 4.2 to 5.5 per cent, poisoning 5.6 per cent and burns 6.8 per cent, it added.

The report noted that despite efforts to improve road safety, India continues to grapple with a high number of fatalities due to road traffic injuries (RTIs).

Mayawati slams ‘Bulldozer justice,’ calls for ‘Rule of Law by Law’

Mayawati slams ‘Bulldozer justice,’ calls for ‘Rule of Law by Law’

New Delhi: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Tuesday criticised the practice of “Bulldozer justice,” urging the government to uphold the “Rule of Law by Law” rather than punishing the families of criminals.

Taking to her X handle, the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister stated, “Action against criminal elements in the country should be taken as per the law, and their family and close ones should not be punished for their crimes.”

She emphasised that her party’s government had previously demonstrated this principle by establishing the “Rule of Law by Law.”

Mayawati also addressed the recent trend of using bulldozers to demolish properties, urging that such actions should comply with decisions made by the Supreme Court.

She remarked, “It would be better if there is no need to use (bulldozers) because criminal elements can be dealt with under strict laws.”

“Instead of using bulldozers on the families and close ones of criminal elements, strict action should be taken against the concerned officials who, in collusion with such elements, do not give proper justice to the victims. All governments must pay attention to this,” the BSP chief further argued.

Tharoor slams govt’s reluctance to give oppn key parl committee chairs

Tharoor slams govt’s reluctance to give oppn key parl committee chairs

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday hit out at the government over its “reluctance” to give the opposition chairpersonship of important parliamentary committees, and said it only reflects its growing insecurity, rather than any accumulation of wisdom or confidence after 10 years.

The remarks by the four-time Thiruvananthapuram MP came over a media report which said the department-related Parliamentary Standing Committees have not been constituted because of disagreements between the government and Opposition, on control of these panels.

In a post on X, Tharoor said it is disappointing that the government appears to have no idea of the purpose of Parliamentary committees, which are to provide an additional layer of scrutiny and accountability for the government without the political grandstanding often associated with publicly-televised sessions of Parliament itself.

“To attempt to deny opposition parties any say in matters of national importance and sensitivity, is to defeat the very logic of having such committees at all,” the former Union minister said.

“It is striking that in 2014, when they first came to power, the then BJP government, in keeping with the existing practice, gave the Congress the chairmanship of both the External Affairs Committee (myself) and the Finance Committee (Veerappa Moily), even though we only had 44 MPs ” he said.

“Today, we have 101 MPs and they are reluctant to give us any important committee?” he added.

Naqvi slams Cong on caste census issue, takes dig at Mamata’s tall claims on justice

Naqvi slams Cong on caste census issue, takes dig at Mamata’s tall claims on justice

New Delhi: BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Tuesday criticised the Congress for politicising the caste census issue, emphasising that the focus should be on addressing social concerns rather than political agendas.

His remarks came in response to a statement by senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, who questioned the BJP’s stance on the caste census.

Ramesh, in a post on X, queried whether the RSS had given the green light for the Prime Minister to “hijack another guarantee of the Congress and conduct a caste census,” further asking if the Sangh had “veto power” on the matter.

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the chief ministers of all states that have “not been able to implement effective legislations to safeguard women”.

Speaking in the assembly after tabling of the Aparajita Woman and Child Bill (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) Bill 2024, Banerjee said the Bill aims at quick investigation, fast justice delivery and enhanced punishment of the guilty.

“Rape is a curse against humanity and social reforms are required to prevent such crimes,” she said.
