HC seeks CBI report on social media posts on Kolkata rape-murder victim

HC seeks CBI report on social media posts on Kolkata rape-murder victim

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed the CBI to file a report by September 18 on detestable posts being made on social media regarding the rape-murder victim of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The court noted that nasty comments, which are far from being acceptable to any member of the society, have been made with the photograph of the victim as found in the copies of the offending posts provided by the petitioner.

The body of the on-duty trainee doctor was found in the seminar room of the state-run hospital on August 9, triggering nationwide outrage. The CBI is investigating the case from the second week of August on an order of the high court.

The petitioner prayed in the PIL that the CBI be directed to investigate the cyber offences in connection with the “unfortunate and brutal incident.”

The court asked the Additional Solicitor General Asok Kumar Chakrabarti, representing the central agency, whether it could find a way to block these types of posts.

The division bench, presided by Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam, directed the joint director, CBI, Kolkata, to look into the grievance expressed by the petitioner with regard to the issue of such abominable social media posts.

Congress MP urges Maharashtra govt to provide succour to rain-hit farmers

Latur: Congress MP Shivaji Kalge has urged the Maharashtra government to provide immediate succour to farmers in Latur and Nanded districts of Maharashtra as recent heavy rains and subsequent flooding have caused large-scale damage to their crops.

Kalge, who represents the Latur Lok Sabha constituency, met chief minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis at Udgir in Latur district on Wednesday on the sidelines of an event and submitted to them a memorandum of demands.

“Farmers in Marathwada region are once again grappling with a natural calamity. It is essential that farmers in Latur and Nanded districts receive immediate and unconditional assistance without panchnama (assessment),” the memorandum said.

“Crops such as soybeans, urad, and cotton witnessed irreparable damage. Farmers are already facing severe financial distress and are crushed under the weight of mounting debts. In this situation, providing a loan waiver would offer much-needed relief,” he said.

Rupee falls 3 paise to settle at 84.01 against US dollar

Rupee falls 3 paise to settle at 84.01 against US dollar

Mumbai: The rupee breached the crucial 84-mark second time within a month and settled 3 paise lower at 84.01 on Wednesday amid a sharp decline in the domestic equity markets as investors stayed away from riskier assets.

However, a weak dollar against major currencies overseas and a drop in crude oil prices capped losses in the local unit, forex traders said.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 83.96 and traded in the range of 83.95-84.02 during the day. The unit moved in a tight range of 83.95-83.97 for most part of the session, but finally settled at 84.01, registering a loss of 3 paise from its previous close of 83.98.

The Indian unit had touched its lowest closing level of 84.09 on August 5.

“…Weak domestic markets and risk aversion in the global markets pressurised the rupee. However, a decline in crude oil prices and FII inflows cushioned the downside. India’s services PMI expanded to 60.9 in August vs forecast of 60.4 and a reading of 60.3 in July,” Anuj Choudhary – Research Analyst at Sharekhan by BNP Paribas, said.

The dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was down 0.17 per cent to 101.65.
