India pips US to become 2nd largest 5G mobile market, Apple leads

New Delhi: India has overtaken the US to become the world’s second-biggest 5G handset market for the first time, behind China, a report has mentioned.

Global 5G handset shipments grew 20 per cent (year-on-year) in the first half of 2024, according to the Counterpoint Research. Apple led the 5G handset shipments, accounting for more than 25 per cent share.

Apple led the 5G handset shipments globally, accounting for more than 25 per cent share, driven by strong shipments of the iPhone 15 series and 14 series.

5G handset shipments have been growing steadily and with the increased availability of 5G handsets in the budget segment, the emerging markets have witnessed high growth in this segment.

“India became the second-biggest 5G handset market during the first half, overtaking the US. The strong shipments from Xiaomi, vivo, Samsung and other brands in the budget segment were the main reason for this trend,” said senior analyst Prachir Singh.

HP: Right-wing groups stage protest demanding demolition of ‘illegal’ mosque

HP: Right-wing groups stage protest demanding demolition of ‘illegal’ mosque

A large group of far-right Hindu bodies, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and residents gathered at Chaura Maidan in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh on Thursday, September 5 to protest against an alleged “illegal” Mosque in Sanjauli.

In a video circulating on social media, the protesters are seen holding the tricolor and saffron flags chanting inflammatory slogans like “Gol* maaro saalo ko” and “katue mulle” (derogatory terms used for Muslims).

The footage has intensified scrutiny of the protest’s tone and its potential impact on communal relations.

The other Hindutva groups gathered to recite Bhajans and Hanuman Chalisa in front of the mosque demanding its removal.

The protest led to a political debate in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly, with BJP and Congress leaders engaging in a blame game.

Ankush Chauhan, a BJP worker stated that all four floors of the Mosque were constructed illegally and no action has been taken despite the matter being pending for a decade. He also demanded an investigation into the increased population in the state, alleging they could be Rohingya or Bangladeshi.

SC to hear today CBI’s plea against bail to Chanda Kochhar

SC to hear today CBI’s plea against bail to Chanda Kochhar

New Delhi: The Supreme Court will hear on Friday a plea filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against a decision of the Bombay High Court releasing former ICICI Bank chief Chanda Kochhar on bail in the alleged Videocon loan fraud case.

A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Sanjay Kumar will take up the CBI’s special leave petition for hearing.

Earlier in February this year, the top court had disposed of the central investigative agency’s plea against the January 2023 decision of the Bombay HC granting interim bail to Kochhar.

However, it had granted liberty to the CBI to file a fresh appeal against the final decision of the High Court confirming the interim bail granted to the Kochhar couple.

In a decision pronounced on February 6, a Division Bench of Justices Anuja Prabhudessai and Nitin R. Borkar of the Bombay High Court confirmed the interim bail order passed in January last year.

“The arrest on 23.12.2022 was not on the basis of any additional material discovered in the course of the investigation but was based on the same material which was within the knowledge of the Investigating Officer at the time of issuance of notice under Section 41A. Such routine arrest without application of mind and due regard to the law amounts to an abuse of power and does not satisfy the requirement of Section 41A(3) Cr.P.C.,” said the high court, adding that the CBI failed to demonstrate the “existence of circumstances or supportive material on the basis of which the decision to arrest was taken.”
