(Virginia) According to Newport News city police and school authorities in the United States, a six-year-old boy shot and wounded a teacher at a school in the state of Virginia on Friday.
The shooting incident took place in a first grade classroom of Rachnek Elementary School, but no student was injured.
Police Chief Steve Drew told reporters that a 30-year-old female teacher was seriously injured in the shooting. He has sustained serious injuries which may be life threatening but his condition is now improving in the hospital.
“We didn’t have a situation where we could say someone was going to shoot up a school,” Drew said. “This was not an accidental shooting,” Drew said. has been taken into custody by the police. But no further information about the shooting was released. Police say the boy had a handgun in the classroom and investigators are trying to determine how it ended up in the boy’s hands.
“I’m shocked and heartbroken,” said city schools Superintendent George Parker. “Today our students learned a lesson about gun violence. They also learned how guns can wreak havoc, not only in an educational environment, but also in a family and a community.”
