47th All India Sociological Conference concludes successfully at USTM

ISS & USTM observe Hundred Years of Sociology in India

9th Mile, Khanapara, Ri Bhoi, December 22, 2022: With the theme “Hundred Years of Sociology in India: Exploring Trajectories for the Future”, the three-day-long mega Sociological event of the country—the 47th All India Sociological Conference has ended successfully here today on a very positive note. Inaugurated by Prof Jagdish Mukhi, Governor of Assam, the Conference saw the participation of more than 1200 sociologists from all over India, providing a wider platform for social scientists to explore and share knowledge. It was organised by the Indian Sociological Society (ISS) from the 20th to 22nd of December and hosted by the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM).

The valedictory session was chaired today by Prof. Abha Chauhan, President, ISS. Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor, USTM, extended his gratitude to all the participating delegates and said that any mega event is a learning chapter for USTM students. “We want to make USTM a global destination”, he added. Giving feedback, the participants were highly appreciative of the hospitality of USTM and the individual attention of student and teacher volunteers.

A total of 29 RC Convenors presented reports during the concluding session of the conference. Thanksgiving in the valedictory session was presented by Prof. Manish Verma, Secretary, ISS, Prof. B.I. Laskar, Organizing Secretary and Prof. Abdul Matin, Chairperson, Local Organizing Committee.

Earlier, the 3rd plenary session titled “North East India in Sociological and Social Anthropological Studies: Emerging Issues and Concerns” was chaired today by Prof. R. K. Mohanty, Dept. of Sociology, Mizoram University, Aizawl. Prof. Dipankar Gupta, CSSS. JNU, New Delhi delivered the “Professor Yogendra Singh Memorial Lecture” with the topic “The New in the Old: Celebrating Fifty Years of Modernization of Indian Tradition”.

Padma Bhushan Prof. Emeritus T. K. Oommen from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi made the keynote address in the Conference. The Presidential Address on “Hundred Years of Sociology in India: Mapping the Trajectory” was delivered by Prof. Abha Chauhan, President of the Indian Sociological Society, and professor of Sociology at the University of Jammu. Prof G D Sharma, Vice Chancellor of USTM, also addressed the gathering.

This three-day-long mega Sociological event includes three memorial lectures, three plenary sessions, and 29 technical sessions apart from the inaugural and valedictory sessions. The Conference schedule also includes lifetime achievement awards, memorial prizes, book launches etc.
