Shocking : No bail petition filed in Umar Gautam’s case even after five months of arrest !

New Delhi: More than five months have passed since the arrests of Mohammad Umar Gautam and Mufti Qazi Jahangir Alam Qasmi under the UP’s anti-conversion law but no attempt has been made to seek their bail so far. Their lawyer, however, justified the inaction calling it “strategic move” even as it accentuated concerns of Gautam’s daughter who had earlier also raised questions over “thin response” of the community organizations.

Lawyers  fielded by the Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind, which is providing legal assistance them, justified the decision of not moving the bail application. Advocate MR Shamshad argued, “It is a part of legal strategy. It is not appropriate to publically disclose the reasons for this.”

Mr Gautam’s daughter, Fatima Guatam, has recently expressed her discontent over lack of required support from the community organisations. She said, “No one cared for us… we are left alone now.”

“Most of our time wasted on discussing legal nitty gritty,  pursuing lawyers etc. No organisation or individual speaks in our favour,” she added.

On June 21, Gautam and Qazi were arrested from Delhi’s Jamia Nagar by the Uttar Pradesh police’s Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) on the charges of ‘mass conversion of people into Islam through  inducements such as marriage, job and money and mental pressure.”

Born in Rajput Fatehpur district’s Rajput family,  Shyam Pratap Singh Gautam had converted to Islam in 1984. His wife also embraced Islam later on.

Impressed with the benign behavior of his roommate Nasir Kahn, who was then doing B.Sc from Govind Ballabh Pant University, Gautam converted to Islam.

“The civil liberty is undisputedly considered a matter of great judicial concern and he expressed his strange on not moving even a bail application on behalf of  Umar Gautam before Sessions Court in Lucknow after five months” said Advocates Sharfuddin Ahmad, Secretary General of AILC .
