Dalit man lynched; Kin say ‘no cremation’ till all members of caste Hindu mob arrested

Family members of a Dalit man who had been beaten to death by an upper-caste Hindu mob on 14 December have been protesting on the premises of Hisar government hospital for the fourth day on Saturday, refusing to cremate the body till all the members of the mob were arrested.

38-year-old daily wager Vinod had been beaten to death, and two of his kin Sandeep and Bhal Singh injured, in Mirkan village of Hisar district in Haryana on Tuesday. The assailants accused Vinod and his kin of stealing an electric motor.

The family members were seeking Rs 50 lakh as compensation, a government job for Vinod’s wife, arrest of all 17 accused in the case, Rs 25 lakh compensation for two injured in the incident, and government jobs to the injured on “DC rate,” according to Indian Express.

In a statement to the cops, the family members of Vinod stated 17 persons from upper-castes were responsible for the murder.

An FIR has been registered with murder charges and under sections of SC/ST Act.

Four people have been arrested while efforts are on to arrest all the remaining suspects, Hisar DSP (headquarter), Ashok Kumar told the newspaper.

The arrested men were identified as Inder Singh, Rajpal, Vijay, and Bhagirath.

The district officials told Indian Express that they have been trying to pursue the family of the deceased to cremate the body by holding multiple rounds of talks with them.

“The process has been initiated to release Rs 4.5 lakh of the compensation amount to the family of the deceased. But it could not be released immediately in the absence of the family’s bank account. Now, a bank account will be opened on Monday to release the compensation amount. Moreover, Rs 1 lakh for each of the injured will also be given,” an official said.
