Stop Hate on Your News Channels, Mushawarat tells Mukesh Ambani

The AIMMM announced to write a series of letters to media barons, starting with Reliance boss Mukesh Ambani who owns News18 group, to reason with on the harm the hate filled content is causing to the society.

NEW DELHI – As a section of mainstream media, particularly TV channels, continued to peddle communally polarising content in the name of news and debates, the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM) has taken upon itself to take the bull by horn. The AIMMM has announced that it would write a series of letters to the media barons, starting with Reliance boss Mukesh Ambani who owns News18 group, to convince them to end this menace.

A letter sent to Ambani by AIMMM president Navaid Hamid on Thursday cited instances where anti-Muslim hatred was spread by anchors of “News18India”, a Hindi channel of the group, through shows such as “Desh Nahi Jhukne Denge” hosted by Aman Chopra.

“These are not normal debates with political, cultural, or social connotations, but sadly are blended in poisonous anti-Muslim agenda,” Hamid wrote in the letter.

“Also, the character of hate debates the channel runs, if scrutinised, cannot escape the scrutiny of “anti-genocide campaign,” the letter pointed out.

Addressing Ambani, the AIMMM chief warned that unless a check is in place such, the debates would cause a “major communal flare-up, social distrust between communities leading to a volatile situation and undoubtedly, destroy the fabric of peace and tranquility of our motherland”.

“The debate shows on the News18India are openly crossing all limits of an impartial journalism, violating journalistic ethics and are, indeed, full of distortions, prejudices, and ill-will against the Muslim community per se,” the letter noted.

These shows, Hamid said, are based on “false and misleading” narratives and have a “malicious and vicious” intent to “create an atmosphere of hatred against Muslims.”

He said the channels peddle hate and make profit out of it “apart from pushing the political agenda of the ruling party because your channel had received maximum money from the UP Information Department.”

AIMMM chief asked Ambani to stop the “filth” from being spread through his channel that could bring global disrepute to his company besides creating “volatile confrontation between communities.”
