Jamia Hamdard organises Symposium on “India’s Global Leadership and G20 Summit”.

New Delhi, September 06, 2023: The Symposium on “India’s Global Leadership and G20 Summit” was organised by the Hamdard Institute of International Studies, Jamia Hamdard in collaboration with the Centre for India West Asia Dialogue (CIWAD) at Hamdard Convention Centre, Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi.

It was an enlightening and insightful event that brought together diplomats, scholars, and experts to discuss India’s role on the global stage and its significance in the upcoming G20 Summit which is being held in New Delhi during 8-9 September, 2023.

Shri Sanjay Verma, Secretary (West), Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India was the chief guest and keynote speaker of the event.

His Excellency, Dr. Bassam  Alkhatib, the Ambassador of Syria to India, was one of the notable speakers along with Ambassador Shri Anil Trigunayat, the former Ambassador of India to Libya and Jordan and former High Commissioner of India to Malta. Prof. Sanjay Kumar Pandey from the School of International Studies, JNU and Dr. Omair Anas, the Director of the Centre for India West Asia Dialogue (New Delhi) were other two speakers who made their remarks during the event.

The symposium was presided over by the Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard, Prof. (Dr.) M. Afshar Alam. 

The Chief Guest and Keynote Speaker Shri Sanjay Verma, Secretary (West), Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India highlighted the significance of India’s evolving global leadership and its role as the host of the G20 Summit. He emphasised the need for adaptation in the face of global disruption and stressed the growing women empowerment in India’s Ministry of External Affairs. He also highlighted India’s progress over the years, both economically and diplomatically, and its emergence as a major player on the world stage. He further spoke about India’s democratic journey, emphasising on the current phase of energetic engagement under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. He proposed plans for India to become a superpower which covers areas such as military development, cultural progress, and technological advancement. Shri Verma praised India’s “Voice of the Global South” initiative held in January this year and its active participation in the BRICS Summit. Overall, the address showcased India’s aspirations to contribute positively to global affairs and promote a cooperative international order.

The Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard, Prof. (Dr.) M. Afshar Alam, who also presided over the Symposium, concluded the event by summarising the key points. He reiterated the importance of India’s role in the G20 Summit and the need for proactive diplomacy and collaboration to address global challenges effectively. Prof. Alam expressed gratitude to the keynote speaker, the other notable speakers and the audience for their participation.
