India’s Omicron tally reaches 200

by | Dec 21, 2021

India has at least 200 cases of the new Omicron variant till now, the health ministry said on Tuesday.

Out of them, 77 patients have recovered or migrated, the ministry added. Maharashtra and Delhi have the highest number of Omicron cases, at 54 each followed by Telangana(20) and Karnataka(19).

Meanwhile, the daily rise in new coronavirus infections has been recorded below 15,000 for the last 54 days now. India recorded 5,326 new coronavirus cases and 453 deaths in the last 24 hours ending 8 am Tuesday. Active cases stand at 79,097 while over 8,000 people recovered on Monday. WHO designated Omicron a variant of concern on 26 November, soon after it was first detected by scientists in South Africa, and much is still not known about it. Scientists remain uncertain how dangerous it is, but early data suggests it can be more resistant to vaccines and more transmissible than the Delta strain. In an update, WHO said Omicron has been reported in 91 countries.
